It does work with Mac, I've just checked. It might be a problem of the browser, not the app.

Podcasting in the English classroom

Lyndsay's curator insight, April 3, 2013 10:12 PM

This link provides a valuable resource for helping students improve their listening and speaking skills. It refers to using the digital technology of podcasting and includes lesson plans and tutorials of how to best use podcasting to benefit students skills. Many of the areas found within the Digital Technologies curriculum (ACARA, 2013) include literacy as a general capability and therefore, this resource would allow students to develop safe digital technology practices as well as improve their digital literacy skills.

What's Lost (And Found) In Machine Translation | Think Tank | Big Think | English as a second language meets technology | Scoop.it

Today's translation machines, both written and spoken, "are extremely clever and give us a lot reasons for thought about what language is and how we may understand language better, but the way they work bears little resemblance, in fact, no resemblance at all to the way human beings both speak," says David Bellos, a translator and director of the Program in Translation and Intercultural Communication at Princeton University.

Oh Say Can You Say? Books Apps and ELL Students

Step inside Julie Kusiak's first-grade class at Ocean Knoll Elementary in Encinitas, Calif., and you'll find her students using iPads in small group rotations. For her English language learner (ELL) students in particular, it's an enriching time where they get to read books on an iPad. The apps provide tools for them to master words and sentences on their own.

"My favorite feature in book apps is the Read to Me option," says Kusiak. "Additionally, kids not quite able to read at their grade level can access the book, tap on a word and have it pronounced and tap on an object and see and hear the word. This is great for second language learners and helps build their vocabulary and reading fluency."

Students at Ocean Knoll have been using Oceanhouse Media book apps among others, enjoying such titles from Dr. Seuss, The Berenstain Bears, Mercer Mayer and the Smithsonian as part of a pilot program between the app developer and the Encinitas Unified School District. English is the second language for many of the students at the school ...

Developing Your Digital Study Skills

Developing Your Digital Study Skills | English as a second language meets technology | Scoop.it

Making the move from our safe and trusted traditional literacy habits to newer digital skills can be quite a challenge, but as teachers I think we are really unlikely to be able to use technology and help our students use technology really effectively unless we are prepared to face this challenge. Technology needs to be more than part of the way we teach but it also has to be part of the way we ourselves continue to learn and part of our everyday professional practice.
