Read Kiddo Read : the inside scoop on what kids really like to read | Engaging readers | Scoop.it

"If you love detective novels, you have probably read some of James Patterson's Alex Cross or Women's Murder Club novels. If you have teens in the house, they might have read his Maximum Ride, Witch & Wizard or Daniel X books. His mysteries and thrillers have topped the best-seller lists for years. In fact, he holds the Guinness Book of World Records title for the most hardcover fiction best-selling titles by one author (63!).

The man is a writing powerhouse, and now, because he is so passionate about books and reading, this award-winning author has created a website recommending great books for kids."

Reaching Reluctant and Struggling Readers

Reaching Reluctant and Struggling Readers | Engaging readers | Scoop.it

"I realize that different teachers will have different styles and also may be somewhat limited in what their schools will allow them to do. Given that, here are some things that worked for me in my classroom full of 13 to 19 year-old struggling and reluctant readers over a period of 15 years. Most of my students were boys."

Going Retro: Reading Apps for Real Books

Going Retro: Reading Apps for Real Books | Engaging readers | Scoop.it

YouTube clips. Texting. Twitter. Facebook status updates.

The prevalence of short-attention-span media — easily scanned or consumed — has led to much hand-wringing over how students will develop that lifelong love of reading perceived to be so critical to lifelong learning.

One answer (in addition to “it’s not as bad as you think,” as a recent Pew Research Center study might be summarized) may be in adapting the function to the form. Which is to say to put real, and sometimes classic, children’s books on the latest digital devices via apps and the web.  Mindshift article on reading Apps.

3 Ways to Help Your Kids Find Books They'll Love

3 Ways to Help Your Kids Find Books They'll Love | Engaging readers | Scoop.it

"My point is that the world of viable literature is much wider than you might think – and your reader might be missing out on something wonderful!
