What Actually Drives Employee Engagement?

What Actually Drives Employee Engagement? | Engagement Junkie | Scoop.it

Employee engagement might be one of those HR buzzwords you’re already sick of hearing about. Just because the topic is trendy, however, doesn’t undercut its importance. Engaged employees are more productive and more likely to stick around your company.

Via Alicia Douglas
Cheryl Hall's insight:

I agree with most of this, but there does not appear to be the data correlating time on social media sites and level of engagement of employees doing it. With so much material now available on those social sites, many of those employees are doing things like curating for their colleagues, looking for data that can help them in their jobs, etc. Is anyone doing any research in the area of social media activity on the job and level of engagement?

Work Engagement Seems to be A Booming Concept. (How employee engagement is a huge win for employers, too: #infographic http://t.co/fLFAIl8mYL)
Cheryl Hall's insight:

Behavioral problems at home, heart attacks and less sex. Not your average set of statistics touting the importance of engagement.

There is a lot of survey data that makes the case for why companies should care about their employees being engaged. But the reasons employees should care about being engaged have not be as clear. Being energized and engaged at work is something a lot of people have never really experienced. Can you truly understand how much better your work life can be if you have never felt truly engaged?

This may be the first time I have seen the personal consequences for employee disengagement so well expressed. When you have data to suggest that being disengaged can impact their health and home life as well as work, that makes a compelling case to any employee.

These are the 10 cities where employees are most engaged at work, according to a new survey by Quantum Workplace.
Cheryl Hall's insight:

One key paragraph for me in this post:

“Engagement involves the presence of three outcomes among employees,” Harris explains. First is discretionary effort—meaning, employee willingness to go the extra mile; second is intent to stay; and third is advocacy—the employee’s willingness to brag about their workplace.

The Psychological Contract | Offer More Than Pay | Peoplefluent

The Psychological Contract | Offer More Than Pay | Peoplefluent | Engagement Junkie | Scoop.it
The new employee contract, the “psychological contract”, helps employers understand what employees need in order to be productive and feel fulfilled in their careers.
Cheryl Hall's insight:

Here is someone who sees both the cloud and the ground of employee engagement.

The cloud:

"I would go even further to assert that providing such growth opportunities and investment in qualified employees borders on a moral imperative. Maybe it is just the simple fact that people spend so much of their waking lives working. To do anything else is a dishonor to an organization and the great people working within that organization."

The ground:

"In not employing total rewards, you are wasting the potential and time of both your employees and the organization as a whole. You are forgoing the opportunity to create an environment where all the individual contributors of your company are aligned..."

The ground comment is a roadmap to providing organizational leaders with meaningful data about the value of investing in engagement programs and the costs to the organization when engagement is deprioritized.
