Rethinking Content in the Digital Age: What should we teach and how?

Rethinking Content in the Digital Age: What should we teach and how? | Engagement Based Teaching and Learning | Scoop.it

"How “deep” into a subject such as Algebra, Biology, Chemistry, or Physics do we need to go for students to identify a passion for the subject? If we stopped teaching them all together, would we have as many doctors and engineers? At what point do we allow a student to say, “This is neither a strength nor a passion for me. I don’t care to pursue this subject further”?

If we change the content in our high schools – if we drop requirements for certain upper level courses or for foreign language – what will take the place of these courses? What could we be offering

When we learn certain subjects, we are not only learning content, but we’re learning a certain process or way of thinking.  Common Core is helping!

Change is made by developing a consensus, and I’m hoping we’re moving closer toward that consensus every day."

Information Overload Isn't A Thing.....Social media increases engagement with information

Information Overload Isn't A Thing.....Social media increases engagement with information | Engagement Based Teaching and Learning | Scoop.it

Forget information overload. What you've got is information just-right-load.  Contrary to many experts' warnings that the "always-on" media environment has "overwhelmed" audiences and creating a society of antisocial Facebook-addicts more interested in hashtags than hugs, the study found that participants said they felt "empowered" and "enthusiastic" about the volume of information at their fingertips, not overloaded.   People were more bothered by "irrelevant" information than too much good information.

Also: Eleven of the 77 people interviewed did report a sense of information overload.  But,  feelings of being "overwhelmed" by information were most common in people with elementary "Internet skills" who were unfamiliar with navigating search engines and social media sites.

I have thought personality also had much to do with this.  My non-tech  friends tend to spend more time arranging their closets and watching tv than I do.  : )

What’s the Difference Between Games and Gamification?

What’s the Difference Between Games and Gamification? | Engagement Based Teaching and Learning | Scoop.it

Perhaps the best way to think about games in education is not to automatically call everything that looks like fun a “learning game.” Lumping all digital game approaches together makes no more sense than a toddler’s inclination to call every four-legged animal a “doggie."
