TED Talks To Spark A Conversation and Engagement

TED Talks To Spark A Conversation and Engagement | Engagement Based Teaching and Learning | Scoop.it

Sometimes, in a group it can be hard to get a conversation started. You need that one focal point for everyone to rally around to get things moving. Videos and images are a great way to get your message out there and get folks talking. The same is true in the classroom. I can be helpful to start a unit or a topic off with some kind of visual stimulant that gets those creative thoughts moving.

That is why I love the TED videos. Especially the Talks In Under 6 Minutes series. These are great, snapshots of what could be longer conversations in short bursts. They come in loads of topics that could start a class discussion or kick off a meeting.

Why Do We Have to Learn This? Making Content Relevant with relationships and rigor | Engagement Based Teaching and Learning | Scoop.it

Relationships, relevance, rigor -- these are the keys to effective teaching, according to what we learned in our teacher training programs and most of our professional development sessions, and is the consistent message from our principal and master teachers.

The relationships part is pretty simple; hard, but simple. The kids need to feel a connection to the teacher, and have to believe that the teacher knows and cares about them before they're ready to move on to the content

Tips for Collaborative Meetings: Engaging Teachers

Tips for Collaborative Meetings: Engaging Teachers | Engagement Based Teaching and Learning | Scoop.it
As someone who loves Edcamp, I hate (really, really hate) top-down, didactic meetings. In many ways, it’s a waste of time. If you're just going to tell me what to do (without my input), save us both a lot of grief and write me an explicit memo or email.   With that being said, I love (really, really love) collaborative meetings where everyone’s ideas are honored and shared. However, running a collaborative meeting can be risky (whether your audience is adults or kids).   If you’re in the process of planning a faculty meeting, consider the following tips (taken from a recent meeting I observed in a fantastic school in New Haven, CT) to make your meeting more collaborative.

Taxonomy of Global Connection Ways to think about engagement

Taxonomy of Global Connection Ways to think about engagement | Engagement Based Teaching and Learning | Scoop.it

Helpful list of ways to think about student engagement: http://t.co/rPtcfA1t...What is global taxonomy?

In Flattening Classrooms, Engaging Minds, Pg 57 Julie Lindsay and Vicki Davis suggest using “A steady methodology for taking students from connecting within your classroom to connecting with the world...” . They describe a taxonomy of five levels:

Level 1: Intra-connection (within your own class)
Level 2: Inter-connection (within school / district)
Level 3: Managed global connection (class to class)
Level 4: Student to student (with teacher management)
Level 5 Student to student (with student management)
