Gust MEES's curator insight, February 24, 2013 2:33 PM

As teachers, we cannot remain behind our desks or in our classrooms, isolated and unsupported. It's not good for our students, our teaching, or ourselves.

PLCs give us the opportunity to collaborate and share our expertise, collectively tackling our students' needs. If we use them strategically, they can make a big difference in how we approach our work.

Educational Leadership:Strengthening Student Engagement: What Do Students Want

Educational Leadership:Strengthening Student Engagement: What Do Students Want | Engagement Based Teaching and Learning | Scoop.it
Founded in 1943, ASCD (formerly the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development) is an educational leadership organization dedicated to advancing best practices and policies for the success of each learner. Our 175,000 members in 119 countries are professional educators from all levels and subject areas––superintendents, supervisors, principals, teachers, professors of education, and school board members.
Mary Perfitt-Nelson's insight:

After taking into consideration the needs and drives we've mentioned, our model poses four important questions that teachers must ask themselves in order to score the level of engagement in their classrooms.

Under what conditions are students most likely to feel that they can be successful? When are students most likely to become curious? How can we help students satisfy their natural drive toward self-expression?How can we motivate students to learn by using their natural desire to create and foster good peer relationships?

Making learning whole: How seven principles of teaching can transform education | CTQ

Mary Perfitt-Nelson's insight:

"Making Learning Whole is Perkins’ argument that education is damaged by breaking knowledge down into discrete parts, which he calls elementitis, a phenomenon that leaves students spitting out fractured facts that have little cohesiveness or application to the subject under study."

Is there a fog around student achievement? What is student achievement? It seems the fog is purposely placed around the concept so we can continue to have discussions which result in an unending parade of bottom lines.

What if captured teacher voice as well?

Usable Knowledge: Education at bat: Seven principles for educators

Usable Knowledge: Education at bat: Seven principles for educators | Engagement Based Teaching and Learning | Scoop.it
HGSE Professor David Perkins uses baseball as a metaphor to describe his concept of “learning by wholes” and his practical teaching principles in his new book, Making Learning Whole: How Seven Principles of Teaching Can Transform Education.
Mary Perfitt-Nelson's insight:
Avoid learning "pieces"...always help them put it together into a whole.  Avoid learning "about" something....DO IT instead.   Putting it all together

To implement these ideas in the classroom, David Perkins suggests that educators start with a junior version of the seven principles—picking and choosing what's most right for their own classrooms, while paying particular attention to “playing the whole game” and “making the game worth playing.” If educators use these principles, Perkins hopes, they will improve their students' understanding of the game, and their ability to play it successfully.
