CBAM: Stages of Concern about Personalized Learning

CBAM: Stages of Concern about Personalized Learning | Engagement Based Teaching and Learning | Scoop.it
CBAM: Stages of Concern about Personalized Learning provides descriptions and strategies to guide change for each stage.

Via Kathleen McClaskey
Kathleen McClaskey's curator insight, February 22, 8:22 AM

Change is not easy. If you are considering transforming to personalized learning environments, you may have concerns about the changes you have to do to make this work for you and your learners. If you are a coach or professional developer, you are working with teachers guiding them through the changes they need to do to personalize learning. This chart can help you determine what type of strategies to use to guide change about the following seven stages:

> Awareness:  do not know about or sure what Personalized Learning is
> Informational: tell me more about Personalized Learning
> Personal: concerned how Personalized Learning will impact them as a teacher
> Management: concerned about managing the classroom when learning is personalized
> Consequence: wants to know how Personalized Learning will impact teaching and learning
> Collaborative: looking forward to share with and learn from other teachers
> Refocusing: nterested to support teachers and lead the way to personalize learning

Karin Gitchel's curator insight, February 26, 11:40 AM

This model provides a great starting point for addressing the concerns of change inside both the education department and elsewhere.

LAC-O Student Engagement Survey 2012

Mary Perfitt-Nelson's insight:

A summary of the results from the 2012 Student Engagement Survey administered by the Learning Achievement Coalition of Oakland County, Michigan.

The survey was given to Teachers and 8th grade students in 13 middle schools in Oakland County

  Teacher surveys = 369  Students = 2,722

The results indicate that student and teacher perceptions differ on a variety of important measures.  Most glaring is about relationships:  teachers tend to focus on the group; students want to be known as individuals.

Using the Micro Lab Protocol to Defend Colony Choice » Cultures of Thinking

Mary Perfitt-Nelson's insight:

Micro Lab Protocol:  The purpose of this routine is to deepen thinking and understanding by engaging students in synthesizing and organizing their ideas  This protocol is designed to ensure equal participation and make sure everyone contributes.  It works best when students are in groups of three.  A protocol is distinguishedl from a routine in that the rounds of sharing are timed by the teacher to keep all the groups on track, and focused. There are four key parts to this protocol:  a) First person shares (1-2 minutes), b) Pause for 20-30 seconds for group members to reflect, c) Repeat for persons 2 and 3, d) Discuss as a group (5-10minutes)

Visible Thinking

Visible Thinking | Engagement Based Teaching and Learning | Scoop.it

Visible Thinking is a broad and flexible framework for enriching classroom learning in the content areas and fostering students' intellectual development at the same time. Here are some of its key goals:

Deeper understanding of content
Greater motivation for learning
Development of learners' thinking and learning abilities.
Development of learners' attitudes toward thinking and learning and their alertness to opportunities for thinking and learning (the "dispositional" side of thinking).
A shift in classroom culture toward a community of enthusiastically engaged thinkers and learners.

The Flakiness Of Artists Is The Key To Their Creativity

In a post on his Scientific American blog, cognitive psychologist Scott Barry Kaufman writes about a  study just published in Creativity Research Journal.
Mary Perfitt-Nelson's insight:

This is exactly why I scoff at the hoopla around "task-switching".  Those disliking it are typically the least creative and most unable to consider more than one thing at a time.  Brisk activity by creatives is not a "choice", it is how they are wired.  There are pros and cons to this; there are pros and cons to slow inaction!

"Why is it that some prefer to study with classical music playing in the background while others soothing when working on difficult Math exercises ? What is it that makes the human brain feel entertained when listening to music ? Do we have special neurons that interpret musical signals and thus fires up dopamine into different areas of our brain making us feel relaxed ?"

Deconstructing Creativity: The 4 Roles You Need to Play to be Fully Creative - Litemind | Engagement Based Teaching and Learning | Scoop.it
Do you want to be fully creative? To not only have wild ideas, but to actually create and bring remarkable things to life? Learn the 4 roles you need to perform, how they help unleash your creativity and how to master the skills each one requires.
Jess Went's curator insight, May 29, 11:49 PM

This is a well written article that discusses how you can look at parts or products of the creative process from various perspectives. Supporting materials are linked throughout the text.

My Suggestion: Use the ideas and suggestions from this article to set up a rotation where groups of students get to adopt the roles of the Explorer, Artist, Judge and Warrior. Provide resources where needed or tools to access the resources. This activity will develop critical, creative and divergent thinking as well as support students' motivation and attitude toward the creative process.

Ivon Prefontaine's curator insight, May 30, 10:28 AM

I don't think they can be forced, but the four roles allow us to find ways to explore, be an artist, etc.

Jess Went's comment, May 30, 10:10 PM
Thanks for your insight Ivon. I agree that the roles can't be forced but I can see benefit in encouraging students to practice thinking in divergent ways by using some of the activities outlined in the article.
