Guy Claxton is professor of education at Bristol University, and author of Hare Brain, Tortoise Mind How Intelligence Increases When You Think Less (1997). Among other concepts, he is interested in how people learn.

More than anything else, the concept of self-directed, entrepreneurial learning and transfer stand out. Learning how to learn is very different than learning content. In the 21st century, access to content and resources is no longer in short supply, but rather access to learning pathways, and authentic reasons to learn, which is where meaning making, critical curiosity, and resilience come in. Making that shift in your own mind is important for these dimensions to be relevant. The shift is from learning content to learning how to learn. The takeaways for teachers probably start with the role of the student in the learning process: voice, choice, personalization, self-direction, project-based learning, and other low-hanging fruit of current trends in learning.

A wonderful resource on creativity and metacognition.
Includes lots of information: "What is creativity: 1. Novelty- a creative product, course of action or idea necessarily departs from the familiar; 2. Effectiveness- it works, in the sense that it achieves some end- this may be aesthetic, artistic or spiritual, but may also be material such as winning or making profit; 3. Ethicality- the term creative is not usually used to describe selfish or destructive behaviour, crimes, war-mongering and the like (Cropely 2010). Although Gardner asserts that creativity is amoral: novel useful ideas or products could either bring benefits or wreak havoc (Moran 2010). For example the science behind nuclear weapons systems could be considered to be creative in conception. You probably think that memory is the exact opposite of creativity. After all, the things you memorize already exist, they're not new. And creativity is all about a new idea that didn't exist before...

We have to move past the notion that there is ONE answer. Creativity is the cornerstone of innovation (which is our future). "One of these techniques is the habit of looking: being aware and mindful of what is happening around you. A second technique is making: putting your ideas out in the world, creating through drawing and building. A third technique is asking: Identifying good questions and formulating problems in productive ways." "Creative insights always come from combinations of existing mental material. New ideas don't just appear out of thin air; they build on existing ideas, concepts, and perceptions, that you've stored in your mind over the years." Delete the scoop?

How often do you struggle with a student, trying to motivate them to be engaged? The author of this post states "I pirate much of my thinking about motivation, kids’ achievement and success in life from my work with young, elite soccer players." He goes on to say that motivation that is found with young soccer players is also found with students in the classroom, that it "makes a real difference."
