Blended learning means offering a combination of face-to-face and online learning opportunities to learners. Blending these learning opportunities can contribute to personalizing learning. However, blended learning is not the only approach that personalizes learning. Personalizing learning starts with the learner. This means that learners have a stake in their learning by taking responsibility for their learning. When they own and drive their learning, they are more motivated to want to learn. In a learning environment that starts with the learner, teacher and learner roles change.
The research at the Students at the Center (studentsatthecenter.org) wrote nine reports on student-centered learning. Eric Toshalls, Ed.D., and Michael Nakkula, Ed.D. in one report, wrote the research on “Learning Theory: Motivation, Engagement and Student Voice” that described:
The Trifecta of Student Centered Learning Motivation - Without motivation, there is no push to learn
“For students to create a new knowledge, to succeed academically, and to develop into healthy adults, they require each of these experiences.” -Toshalls and Nakkula

As a framework, UDL requires educators to think proactively about the variability of all learners. In consideration of the UDL Critical Elements, educators implementing UDL should use a backwards design instructional process that incorporates the following five steps.
1: Establish Clear Outcomes 2: Anticipate Learner Variability 3: Measurable Outcomes and Assessment Plan 4: Instructional Experience 5: Reflection and New Understanding
The Universal Design for Learning Implementation and Research Network (UDL-IRN) is a grassroots organization that supports the scaled implementation and research related to Universal Design for Learning. To differentiate, you do not need to make multiple versions of the same lessons! UDL is about multiple means of accessing learning, engagement, and mastery. Technology facilitates learning. Not just for Special Ed . Not just assistive technology. Like PBIS, it is a framework.
Learners must construct meaning. Barriers are not always within the student.

"No two students are the same, no two students process information the same, and therefore students deserve to have information presented in multiple ways, students should be encouraged to showcase their knowledge in multiple ways, and students should be motivated in multiple ways." Melissa tells the story of UDL and includes video of UDL and the three principles along with the tools that can help support a diversity of learners in the classroom: the CAST Lesson Builder, UDL Curriculum Self-check and Book Builder.

From the site: "Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a framework for designing curricula that enable all individuals to gain knowledge, skills, and enthusiasm for learning. UDL provides rich supports for learning and reduces barriers to the curriculum while maintaining high achievement standards for all." Delete the scoop?

Mastery learning.........an effective way to keep kids engaged.
"I actually spend far, far more time interacting with students about the content, their understanding of it and answering their questions when running a self-paced mastery classroom than I ever did running a traditional classroom!"
