I selected this article from Curatti written by Scott Aughtmon because it explains the scientific process behind our brain response to compelling content.

Understand what drives people to respond to a story.

Study Reveals Engaging Content Wins Over Readers

The creative locations in the brain respond to certain types of storytelling. I agree that in order to attract an audience you need to understand what how they respond.

Aughtmon shows us how the mind if affected when presented with a catchy story.

Here's what caught my attention:

  • Stories activate larger areas in the brain – ones that "represent different aspects of meaning." Our mind isn't just listening, but it's also engaging.

  • The study shows that our brains are trying the comprehend what's happening in a story. It acts like a computer and starts to analyze the data.

  • Our minds will try to anticipate what is going to happen next. The brain actually sees what is being described visually.

5 Tips for Making Teacher-Parent Communication Successful

5 Tips for Making Teacher-Parent Communication Successful    | Engaged Learning Ideas | Scoop.it
Parents and teachers, and their better communication plays a crucial role in shaping the future of kids. Along with the perfect teaching methods, better parental involvement can not only enhance a child’s motivation for learning but also develop a positive attitude about the school in general. Communication between both the teachers as well as parents throughout the year is essential to support student’s success and well-being. A student who knows that the teacher communicates on a regular basis with their parents will understand that their parents trust the teacher, thus will likely put more effort into school. With advanced apps such as parent communication portal, improved communication is not an impossible task now.

Who owns the learning? Preparing students for success in the Digital Age (Alan November)

Alan November is an international leader in education technology. He began his career as an oceanography teacher and dorm counselor at an island reform school for boys in Boston Harbor. While Alan was a computer science teacher in Lexington, MA, he was probably the first teacher in the world to have a student project on line in 1984, a database for the handicapped. He has been director of an alternative high school, computer coordinator, technology consultant and university lecturer. He has helped schools, governments and industry leaders improve the quality of education through technology.

Audiences enjoy Alan's humor and wit as he pushes the boundaries of how to improve teaching and learning. His areas of expertise include planning across curriculum, staff development, new school design, community building and leadership development. He has delivered keynotes and workshops in all fifty states, across Canada and throughout the UK, Europe, Asia, Australia, and Central America.

Alan was named one of the nation's fifteen most influential thinkers of the decade by Technology and Learning Magazine. In 2001, he was listed as one of eight educators to provide leadership into the future by the Eisenhower National Clearinghouse. In 2007, he was selected to speak at the Cisco Public Services Summit during the Nobel Prize Festivities in Stockholm, Sweden. His writing includes numerous articles and two best-selling books, Empowering Students with Technology and Web Literacy for Educators. Alan was co-founder of the Stanford Institute for Educational Leadership Through Technology and is most proud of being selected as one of the original five national Christa McAuliffe Educators.
