Grid parity solar: CSP gains on PV

Grid parity solar: CSP gains on PV | Sustainable Energy | Scoop.it

May 29, 2012

Growth in the Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) sector faltered last year as photovoltaic (PV) module prices dropped, driving several high-profile U.S. projects to convert to PV.

In the long-run, however, CSP’s ability to incorporate thermal storage and to supplement conventional power generation offers benefits beyond the value of the kilowatt-hours they generate. Dispatchable power, for example, can improve financial performance and help the grid operator to reliably match supply and demand.

Ten million low-income people living in rural communities in Sub-Saharan Africa, Asia and the Pacific, Latin America and the Caribbean, will gain access to low-cost solar energy by 2015, in part due to a commitment made by solar energy provider Barefoot Power to the Business Call to Action (BCtA).

The BCtA is a global initiative that encourages private sector efforts to fight poverty, supported by several international organizations including the UN Development Programme (UNDP)

Floating photovoltaic island concept lets you relax below the waves

Floating photovoltaic island concept lets you relax below the waves | Sustainable Energy | Scoop.it

A designer named Michel Puzzolante has come up with a concept for a self-sustaining luxury floating island that operates entirely on renewable energy.

The "Solar Floating Resort" is, according to the embedded video, "part habitation, part yacht and part submarine". It includes amenities for up to six guests (in two single and two double bedrooms) with both large communal areas and smaller, more private spaces. Right at the bottom of the vessel, below the waves, a spiral staircase leads down to an observation bulb where you can stare out at the ocean's flora and fauna.
