Aruba Headed for 100% Renewables | American Solar Energy Society | Sustainable Energy | Scoop.it
Rio, Brazil (CWR release) ― The Government of Aruba and the Carbon War Room (CWR), the global entrepreneur initiative founded by Sir Richard Branson and a group of entrepreneurs, have announced a partnership to transition the island to 100 percent renewable energy. The partnership would make Aruba the world’s first sustainable energy economy, with CWR and New America Foundation  (NAF) working to both devise and implement an integrated strategy for the economy-wide transition ― a world first, if successful.

Bridging the greenhouse-gas emissions gap : Nature Climate Change : Nature Publishing Group | Sustainable Energy | Scoop.it
We propose a new approach — which we call 'wedging the gap' — consisting of 21 coherent major initiatives that together would trigger greenhouse-gas emission reductions of around 10 gigatonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (Gt CO2e) by 2020, plus the benefits of enhanced reductions in air-pollutant emissions.

Citizens Group Looking to Buy Berlin Grid (to Integrate More Renewable Energy)

Citizens Group Looking to Buy Berlin Grid (to Integrate More Renewable Energy) | Sustainable Energy | Scoop.it

Apparently, a citizens group in Berlin is looking to buy the capital city’s electricity grid. The group, Bürger Energie Berlin (BEB), wouldn’t be the first to do such a thing. As noted in this post on the documentary Power Play, Germans in the village of Schönau bought their grid decades ago and turned the area into a renewable energy leader.

Improving energy use key challenge for world's food systems – FAO

Agriculture’s heavy dependence on fossil fuels is undermining the sector’s ability to feed the world, perpetuating poverty and undermining efforts to build a more sustainable world economy, the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) said on Wednesday.
The warning came as the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation released a study on “Energy-smart” food production and use ahead of the Rio+20 conference on sustainable development, where global energy challenges will feature high on the agenda. Together, the world’s food production systems – from the farms where food is grown to further along the processing and marketing chain – consume 30 per cent of all available energy, the FAO study shows.

Breakthrough on energy efficiency deal

Breakthrough on energy efficiency deal | Sustainable Energy | Scoop.it

"Although the text in Article 6 on the energy efficiency obligation schemes is not as strong as the Parliament wanted, it is an important achievement that for the first time ever Member States will have to have a long term strategy with policy and measures in place for dealing with the energy efficiency of their buildings.

"In addition, the Parliament secured an early review of the deal in 2016 including of the exemptions that currently weaken Article 6.

"Thanks to the changes insisted upon by the Parliament, the directive will now achieve 17% of the 20% energy efficiency savings needed by 2020 - as compared to less than 15% before last night.

Cheap Coal Is Dead. Long Live Renewables. (Part 1)

While coal is geologically more abundant than oil, cheap coal, close to population centers, is not. The biggest coal- producing region in the U.S. -- the Powder River Basin -- can get coal out of the ground for about $12 a ton. It costs roughly $60 a ton to ship it to power plants in the Ohio Valley. China’s vast reserves near Inner Mongolia can be mined for $25 a ton. But by the time it travels by rail across North China, then by sea to southern coastal cities, the cost rises to more than $125 a ton.

Solar projects held back by risk worries in Australia

Solar projects held back by risk worries in Australia | Sustainable Energy | Scoop.it

Lack of confidence is impeding development of enough big-scale solar power to provide a lot of Australia's electricity generation and the federal government needs to do more to show the technology is financially viable, the Australian Solar Institute says.A report commissioned by the institute - released today - found that concentrated solar power (CSP) technology, which uses mirrors or lenses to obtain heat energy from the sun to produce power, can contribute up to 15 gigawatts of capacity with only "modest" investment in transmission.

But governments and the solar sector needed to demonstrate that risks could be overcome, said Mark Twidell, executive director of the institute.
