When one thinks of animal dung, one usually thinks: messy. Dutch research institute TNO has developed a prototype of a socket that turns biogas heat into electricity. Together with SNV and BoP Innovation Center, students at Delft University of Technology visited Rwanda for TNO to test this new prototype in people's homes. According to the United Nations, access to reliable and sufficient sources of energy will be critical to meeting the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) of reducing poverty and hunger by 2015. Many of the world’s poorest people are rural farmers with no connections to power grids or large-scale energy sources. Most of their day-to-day energy currently comes from the burning of wood and charcoal, practices that contribute to air pollution, deforestation, and the loss of precious time and energy collecting firewood. Another speaker, Josiah Omotto who heads Umande Trust, touched on a popular theme for the day: Toilets. Who can do without them? But what forward thinking people like Omotto are doing is using human waste and turning it into biofuel. Each of us produces on average 300 grammes of waste per day; Omotto’s organisation has designed a bio-digester system that produces safe cooking gas and alternative sanitation systems.
