A clear decision: Sydney water catchment fracking ruled out for now

A clear decision: Sydney water catchment fracking ruled out for now | Energy Science | Scoop.it

Coal seam gas drilling has been ruled out of Sydney's drinking water catchment for the time being, after the state's planning assessment commission killed off an ambitious plan to extract billions of dollars of gas.

The potential impacts of drilling in the pristine bushland area between Sydney and Wollongong were too uncertain, the commission said.

Apex Energy NL had already been granted a license to drill 15 exploratory bores in the catchment area in 2009, but no work had yet been done.

FRACKING AMERICA: Utah Makes Deal For Private Gas Drilling on Pristine Public Land

FRACKING AMERICA: Utah Makes Deal For Private Gas Drilling on Pristine Public Land | Energy Science | Scoop.it

| PBS NewsHour | Nov. 27, 2012

White River, Utah, attracts adventurers for its gorgeous vistas and rare solitude. But proposals to drill for natural gas on the public land worry environmentalists and Native American

The energy company Anadarko has a lot riding on the Greater Natural Buttes project, and the numbers are staggering: 3,700 wells, six trillion cubic feet of gas reserves, billions to be paid in royalties to the state government of Utah and to the federal government, and thousands of jobs created.

The only question was, could they pull all that gas out of the ground and make peace with environmentalists and Indian tribes to save one of America's last great landscapes?
