Martin Rauch (A) - Topic: Construction with Stamped Clay

Martin Rauch (A) - Topic: Construction with Stamped Clay | Energy in Buildings 2012 | Scoop.it

"Rauch discovered clay architecture not through architecture, but through his education and his first projects as a ceramicist, oven builder and sculptor. His tendency towards applied craftsmanship, towards the thoroughly artistic autonomy of living and environmental design, was already predetermined by his family’s farming roots in Vorarlberg, although the decisive impulses for Rauch came to him abroad in that like some of his older siblings he worked for many months as an aid volunteer in Africa. The encounter with “primitive” means of existence and techniques of building in simple cycles and with the optimal use of resources occurred simultaneously to observing their brutal displacement by technologies from the First World that were extremely complex, ecologically far worse, difficult to repair, and non-recyclable.

In Africa his artistic impulse took on a global perspective. His subjective tendency to work with povera—primitive artistic material—found an objective, conceptual framework. The shaping of clay grew to a desire to architecturally design with earth. The molding of tiles and ovens became shaping and construction on a larger scale in the recasting of soil into inhabitable (spatial) figures. Instead of handing in the tea service called for by Matteo Thun for his diploma project at the University of Applied Arts Vienna, Rauch submitted a study on the potential of clay construction...

Flourentzos Flourentzou, Dr. (CH/CY) - Topic: Natural & Free Cooling | Energy in Buildings 2012 | Scoop.it

Flourentzos Flourentzou, born in Cyprus, is co-creator and director of Estia SA, a leading Swiss company in research and consulting for sustainable build environment: bioclimatic architecture, low energy buildings, refurbishment diagnosis and investment strategies.

He did his first steps as a researcher in bioclimatic architecture in the Solar Energy and Building Physics Laboratory (LESO - EPFL– Lausanne). In the framework of European research projects, he studied natural ventilation and dynamic thermal behaviour of passively cooled buildings. In a recent research project, he directed the development of the new software “DIAL+ Cooling”, simulating passively heated, cooled and ventilated buildings, with the ambitious objective to make dynamic simulation a professional tool for non-building-physics specialists.

In parallel with his activity in biocimatics, he oriented his works to multicriteria decision aid theory. His theoretical results are on the origin of European methods EPIQR and INVESTIMMO (diagnosis and sustainable investment management in building refurbishment, methods widely applied in Switzerland and Germany).

Since 15 years, he accompanied the optimisation of thermal behaviour and energy performance of major architectural projects. Pioneer large-scale passive and low energy buildings like Ecole International de Geneve, WTO headquarters in Geneva, or Fontenette 300 passive HLM dwellings are few of the numerous projects in which he participated. Recently he applied the passive technics in the Mediterranean climate with the emblematic new passive and bioclimatic town hall of Nicosia.
