The U.S. has 2,400 hydropower dams, many of which sport out-of-date generating equipment that is, well, generations old. That’s the bad news. The good news is, it all adds up to the potential for a massive energy efficiency upgrade program that could significantly boost U.S. hydropower generation without the monumental expense and environmental disruption involved in new dam construction. In fact, the first round of hydropower upgrades is already underway at an average cost of less than 4 cents per kilowatt-hour.

Till the time that happens, an innovation like km-tech can be relied upon to ease the situation, as it will help the players in the power sector better manage their power needs and also save them some money in the process. Explaining the issues with the existing forecasting tools, he says, “The existing forecasting technologies face the drawback of using a large historian data before being able to predict to standard practical accuracy levels. Moreover, most of the existing technologies fail to capture the dynamics of even moderately irregular variation patterns of the variables, which are to be estimated. In order to attain these attributes some of these technologies tend to lose the golden property of 'Simplicity'. Extendibility to the future electricity grid environment and applicability to a wide variety of forecasting problems are the other major drawbacks.”

Worldwide, the digital warehouses use about 30 billion watts of electricity, roughly equivalent to the output of 30 nuclear power plants, according to estimates industry experts compiled for The Times. Data centers in the United States account for one-quarter to one-third of that load, the estimates show.

“It’s staggering for most people, even people in the industry, to understand the numbers, the sheer size of these systems,” said Peter Gross, who helped design hundreds of data centers. “A single data center can take more power than a medium-size town.”

The Kyoto Protocol's emissions offset market is oversupplied by 13 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide, more than 1,000 times greater than the anticipated demand of 11.5 million mt, according to analysis by Thomson Reuters Point Carbon.

If the 13 billion tons are genuine, it would be great news, as it represents about 3 years of emissions of the Eu, or about half a year of global emissions. However, the collapse of the CDM price requires a more stringent framework. It also creates incentives for governments to fullfil their carbon obligations abroad at a discount.

The recent boom in shale gas production and the subsequent decrease in the price of natural gas have left some wondering what the role for energy efficiency will be in the future.

"Historically, the natural gas market has experienced booms and busts where prices ranged from $2 to $16 per million British thermal units (MMBtu). Last winter, the United States entered a boom period driven by unseasonably warm weather and an explosion of domestic shale gas production and prices at historic lows—under $2 per MMBtu. Looking forward, ICF forecasts that prices will not remain at the current low levels. ICF estimates a steady increase in the price of natural gas to more than $4 per MMBtu by the end of 2012. Over the long term ICF forecasts that prices will increase as demand accelerates, bringing the price closer to $7 per MMBtu ($2010). The current wellhead price of gas is currently around $3 per MMBtu, up from $1.89 in April of this year.

Though the United States has made progress advancing energy efficiency, there is still an abundance of untapped energy efficiency resources available. States should make investments in energy efficiency measures first before undertaking expensive fuel switching projects. Doing so will increase stability in the electricity and natural gas sectors creates jobs, lower customer utility bills, reduce pollution, and extend the available supply of natural gas."

However, some stakeholders believe the manner in which industrial programs are currently evaluated for their impacts does not accurately reflect the reality of how customers use industrial energy efficiency programs. Others believe the metrics sought in evaluation are not meaningful and alternatives could be considered.

Nanostructured thermoelectric material breaks record for turning heat into electricity.  Materials known as thermoelectrics use temperature differences to drive electrons from one end to another. The displaced electrons create a voltage that can in turn be used to power other things, much like a battery. A new created material has a conversion efficiency of about 15% — double that of normal PbTe thermoelectrics.

Macquarie Equities Research said in a client note several days ago that energy efficiency measures really do seem to be having an impact on electricity demand, and the effect is likely to continue. It’s not just theoretical or wishful, the analysts said. “Unfortunately for investors,” the firm said, “utilities expect this demand destruction to continue or even accelerate.”

He acknowledged that there was “an inherent perverse disincentive for utility suppliers to support energy efficiency, since their earnings expand along with increased utilities usage”. Hence, there is a need for suppliers to receive incentives so they could, for instance “take the lead and help an industrial customer retrofit their building to be more energy-efficient, in locations where the customer lacks expertise to do so or faces competing demands for its capital”.
