Strong Marketing Is Essential for Energy Efficiency Finance | Energy Efficiency Markets Blog

Marketing is an essential ingredient for the success of energy efficiency finance. But too often, finance and efficiency experts focus on technical and financial issues and underestimate the importance of marketing. Using best practices in marketing is necessary to drive demand to the high levels state goals require.

How to Install and Use an Energy Management System

How to Install and Use an Energy Management System | Energy Efficiency in Industry | Scoop.it
For facilities with hundreds of devices to manage, monitor and track, a central system is required to pool data from the device, circuit or load into understandable, actionable information. Energy management software trends data to manage expenses across a facility, making it possible to compare equipment or facility energy consumption and identify inefficient practices. Software calculates the return on changing habits, replacing equipment.

LG, Samsung see energy efficiency marketing pay off

LG announced last week a 75 percent increase in sales of Energy Star Most Efficient products. Part of that increase is due to an increase in the number of Most Efficient-designated products in the company’s line: LG had only eight televisions and five washing machines eligible for the label when the program launched in 2011. Now, it has more than 60 Most Efficient products available, across all four product categories (refrigerators, televisions, washers, and heating and cooling).

Energy efficiency could allow UK to close 22 power stations
The Guardian
The strategy identifies four significant barriers that have consistently hampered energy efficiency improvements: an underdeveloped market; lack of information on energy; misaligned financial incentives, which mean the person who is responsible for making improvements does not always receive the benefits of their actions; and the hassle of installing efficiency me

Stephane Bilodeau's curator insight, January 23, 2013 8:40 PM

After manufacturers developed “instant-on” televisions in the late 1960s, the trend toward standby defaults in consumer electronics spread, and soon “inactive” machines were drawing 10% of total residential electricity consumption. Even as the number of such devices mushroomed, though, new low-power technologies reduced the share of the electricity used in standby modes.

Less than a decade ago, televisions in homes around the world consumed significant electricity whether they were turned on or off. But in 1999 the IEA spearheaded the  “1-watt” initiative that led to the average new television’s standby consumption falling from about 5 watts to half a watt, saving energy for countries, money for consumers and carbon from the atmosphere.

Rotten Fruit: Why ‘Picking Low-Hanging Fruit’ Hurts Efficiency And How To Fix The Problem | The Energy Collective

Rotten Fruit: Why ‘Picking Low-Hanging Fruit’ Hurts Efficiency And How To Fix The Problem | The Energy Collective | Energy Efficiency in Industry | Scoop.it

Successful energy efficiency programs almost always mean “picking the low-hanging fruit” or “cream skimming.” This means implementing the most cost-effective retrofits—upgrades that offer the largest and quickest return on investment (ROI). The problem is that even though “picking the low-hanging fruit” implies there’s more work to be done, nobody ever gets the ladder. Progress typically stops with the out-of-the-park home run project that was almost too good to be true, like a lighting retrofit. The result is that only the highest ROI projects comprise the entirety of an organization’s or household’s energy efficiency program, achieving, say, 5 or 10 percent of the total available carbon footprint reductions (if you’re lucky) and leaving the rest on the table.

Energy Efficiency is not difficult – it is only complicated — ECEEE

Energy Efficiency is not difficult – it is only complicated — ECEEE | Energy Efficiency in Industry | Scoop.it

People respond fairly accurately to the question of what they could do to improve their energy situation. Only not now, it has to wait till the next time they get a chance. The real problem, states Hans Nilsson in this column, is that people with basic knowledge and good intentions still have problems finding out HOW to do what they know they should do. They should not be made aware or informed or motivated. They should be empowered.

A New Way to Foot Efficiency Upgrades

A New Way to Foot Efficiency Upgrades | Energy Efficiency in Industry | Scoop.it

For commercial property owners in California looking to finance energy efficiency upgrades for their buildings, the process should be a bit easier and cheaper come early next year, thanks to a new pilot program. Based on an “on-bill repayment” feature, the program would allow the property owner to avoid large upfront costs and instead pay for upgrades through regular installments on his utility bill. The concept is not new. The new twist is the source of financing and the obligation to repay the loan regardless of a change in ownership.

The analysis by the Financial Services unit of Siemens (SFS) has found that companies around the world have picked up the pace of their investment activities in energy-efficient technology in an effort to cut energy usage and costs. This push is being fueled by rising energy costs. But the financing of environmentally conscious systems frequently remains a challenge. In particular, tight restrictions applied to loans are limiting the investment options of companies in industrial countries. As a result, alternative financing models are playing an increasingly important role.
