These massive savings were driven by massive investments. $5.7 billion was spent on energy efficiency efforts in 2011 – with an 18% increase of $879 million over 2010 expenditure levels.

 

Ten states represented 71% of total energy efficiency spending, led by California’s $1.3 billion – nearly three times second-place New York State’s $554 million. Three states doubled their expenditures from 2010, and nine states increased their energy efficiency spending by over 50%.

Japan’s national energy strategy experienced a 9.0 quake of its own in 2011 as a result of the twin incidents of the March 11 tsunami and subsequent Fukushima nuclear accident. It rattled many assumptions about energy sources and electrical grid configurations for its major corporations too. A recent Silicon Valley Technology Forum hosted by Fujitsu served as an excellent opportunity to hear how these large-scale events have shaped thinking and R&D in the leading information and communications (ICT) company in Japan, which also happens to be the third largest ICT company in the world. Their thoughts and R&D can help contribute to North American ideas and directions to improve our energy surety as well as grid reliability and resiliency that the Smart Grid’s modernization activities must deliver.

From our friends at NASA comes this amazing 13-second animation that depicts how temperatures around the globe have warmed since 1950. You’ll note an acceleration of the temperature trend in the late 1970s as greenhouse gas emissions from energy production increased worldwide and clean air laws reduced emissions of pollutants that had a cooling effect on the climate, and thus were masking some of the global warming signal.

 

The data come from NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York (GISS), which monitors global surface temperatures. As NASA notes, “All 10 of the warmest years in the GISS analysis have occurred since 1998, continuing a trend of temperatures well above the mid-20th century average.

The Department of Energy’s three-year-old Better Plants program has helped more than 100 companies discover energy savings hiding within their facilities.

In 2012, partner companies achieved an average energy-intensity improvement of 3.15 percent, putting them ahead of the annual improvement needed to just meet the 25 percent goal, which is 2.5 percent per year.

"One immediate conclusion from this assessment is that the productivity of our economy may be more directly tied to greater levels of energy efficiency rather than a continued mining and drilling for new energy resources," wrote Laitner.

The five biggest energy intensive industrial branches in Europe have the potential of saving more than 5 billion tons of CO2 by 2050. They can do this by switching from fossil energy for heat production to 100% electricity. The technology needed for this switch is available through electromagnetic processing of materials (EPM). The significant CO2 savings can be reached because of the increasing contribution of renewable sources to the electricity generation in Europe.

What do you think of when you hear the phrase, “energy efficiency?”  Compact fluorescent (CFL) lighting?  Maybe Energy Star appliances or adding insulation to your attic.

What all of these things have in common is that they are all residential solutions, but despite their greater numbers residential customers use far less electricity than do commercial and industrial customers.  Certain industries (e.g. cement, steel, aluminum) use enormous amounts of power, but the efficiency conversation rarely touches on these users.

That’s unfortunate because industry is where the big potential savings are.  Consider that while all lighting (residential, commercial, industrial combined) accounts for around 5.5 percent of total electricity consumption, electric motors in industrial applications alone use nearly five times as much, fully 25 percent of all electricity consumption.

People often argue that more energy efficiency actually increases energy use, known as the rebound effect. Is there any good evidence to support that claim?
Diedert Debusscher's insight:

A survey of energy efficiency reobound studies, published by nature, again shows that the rebound effect is real, but small. The maximum number you can get is 60%, and that’s already quite a stretch. Think 30% as the upper bound for actual behavioral responses.
