Watch 62 Years of Global Warming in 13 Seconds

Watch 62 Years of Global Warming in 13 Seconds | Energy Efficiency in Industry | Scoop.it

An amazing 13-second NASA animation depicting how the globe has warmed during the period of 1950 to 2012.

From our friends at NASA comes this amazing 13-second animation that depicts how temperatures around the globe have warmed since 1950. You’ll note an acceleration of the temperature trend in the late 1970s as greenhouse gas emissions from energy production increased worldwide and clean air laws reduced emissions of pollutants that had a cooling effect on the climate, and thus were masking some of the global warming signal.

The data come from NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York (GISS), which monitors global surface temperatures. As NASA notes, “All 10 of the warmest years in the GISS analysis have occurred since 1998, continuing a trend of temperatures well above the mid-20th century average.

ACEEE | A Defining Framework for Intelligent Efficiency

The potential for new energy efficiency remains enormous. While a large portion of our past efficiency gains came from improvements in individual products, appliances, and equipment, and these device-level technology improvements will continue to play an important role, looking ahead we must take a systems-based approach to dramatically scale up energy efficiency to meet our future energy challenges.

Intelligent efficiency is a systems-based approach to efficiency that can help to meet this need. Enabled by information and communication technology (ICT) and user access to real-time information, intelligent efficiency differs from component energy efficiency in that it is adaptive, anticipatory, and networked. Opportunities exist along a continuum of technology and human behavior, and we classify the resource into three broad categories across this continuum: (1) people-centered efficiency; (2) technology-centered efficiency; and (3) service-oriented efficiency.

Diedert Debusscher's insight:

Comprehensive framework. Like their view on the opportunities from a shit towards system-based efficiency in industry.

“Sustainable energy is vital to Ireland’s economic recovery and job creation. Actions such as home energy upgrades and business energy cost savings are already proving how costs can be lowered and jobs created. At the same time, Ireland is exploiting its great natural resource – renewable energy – and thus dramatically reducing its imports of fossil fuels.

Sustainable Heating and Cooling of Buildings | Leonardo ENERGY

In many non-residential buildings across Europe, the energy consumed for heating and cooling is more than half the total energy consumption of the building. This is not inevitable. The introduction of simple design concepts and currently available technologies can lead to significant reductions in the energy consumption, operating costs, and carbon emissions of both new and existing buildings.

Diedert Debusscher's insight:

This guide therefore discusses some of the technologies and systems that can be installed into new buildings to provide more sustainable heating and cooling. It also considers how existing systems can be improved through retrofitting improved technology or simply adjusting control strategies to reduce waste. Watchpoints are included after each section to assist specifiers in assessing whether these technologies and systems might be feasible for their building.

Absolutely - I've heard two IBM speakers at conferences on energy efficiency speaking about the importance of managing big data to get the most out of analytics. It's an important trend for the building controls sector to watch.
ProviderPower's curator insight, May 1, 2013 5:25 PM

Smaller niche companies are participating in the energy management systems market with unique product and service offerings, but these companies generally require partnering relationships with the larger, more established vendors in order to access the market.

Although technology is advancing at a brisk pace, end-use clients may not be adapting as quickly. Many of the potential buyers of energy management systems are at a stage where they understand the benefits of implementing these systems, but prefer to utilize more basic technology and applications.

This is due to resource constraints as well as the early stage of progress of understanding energy consumption and energy efficiency in which these companies find themselves.

More sophisticated energy management systems adopters are finding that the line between production and the corporate environment is blurring.

Energy is now considered just another data source that can be combined with a host of other business intelligence to provide a more holistic and complete  picture of overall business performance.

New CCCL White Paper: Encouraging Energy Efficiency through the Clean Air Act

A new white paper by CCCL examines the myriad ways that the CAA can be used to promote energy efficiency. One of the chief components of the CAA is the setting of National Ambient Air Quality Standards (“NAAQS”) for non-hazardous pollutants, which are set by EPA but generally implemented by the adoption of implementation plans by each state. These state implementation plans (“SIPs”) can include energy efficiency programs so long as they provide quantifiable, additional, enforceable, and permanent reductions of emissions of the pollutant being regulated.

Standard EN 50160 | Leonardo ENERGY

Standard EN 50160 | Leonardo ENERGY | Energy Efficiency in Industry | Scoop.it

Standard EN 50160 should be understood as representing a compromise between the three parties which exert an influence on the power quality, i.e. network operator, network user, and manufacturer of equipment. Each of these three parties has an interest in playing their part. It is essential that electricity suppliers provide, as a minimum, a nominally adequate quality of supply. If the customer has higher requirements, mitigation measures should be provided by the user, or a separate agreement for a higher supply quality must be negotiated with the supplier. However, the important advantages of this standard are:

Definition of the voltage parameters important for power qualityQuantitative determination of reference values that can be used in the evaluation of the power quality

It is the task of the electricity regulator to set a level of quality that requires best practice from the supplier, while not setting the level so high that the price of electricity increases for everybody.

ACEEE | Overcoming Market Barriers and Using Market Forces to Advance Energy Efficiency

The United States has made much progress in energy efficiency in recent decades. U.S. energy use is approximately half of what it would have been if we had not improved our efficiency over the past 40 years. Still, there are large, cost-effective opportunities to increase energy efficiency much further, thereby helping us to cut energy bills, reduce pollution, and encourage economic growth. However, a variety of market failures and market barriers contribute to keeping us from fully realizing our energy efficiency potential.
