Arun Shrivastava's insight:

Now, this is something just about anyone with basic knowledge of plumbing can do in his backyard or roof top and get endless supply of hot water. Made almost entirely of scraps and discarded metal pipes [except the copper coil and some valves] it's an ideal DIY stuff.

I think this concept can be tweaked to build a room heating system in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand where people still use wood fired stove shaped almost exactly like the contraption in the picture, except that in traditional Himalayan stove there is possibly 50% heat loss and it last about one/two year because manufacturers low quality tin sheets.

This is something worth trying because in every village there is plenty of waste wood from lopping, twigs and dead/dry leaves, shrubs etc and would even reduce pressure on forests.

Thorium Plasma Battery Technology - Wrongly Top Secret? - Green Energy Reports - Open Salon | SMART INNOVATIONS | Scoop.it
Arun Shrivastava's insight:

THEFT OF THORIUM SANDS FROM INDIA

Why monazite sands were stolen and never probed although the stories hit the headlines many times. Thorium is the safest nuclear fuel and many scientists have designed, created and demonstrated safe and green nuclear energy. The author of this article says:

"Since 2006, five different inventors have designed, three have created, and two have demonstrated self-contained safe and green nuclear "plasma" batteries that can put out reliable and stable power for 5-10 years - without a single recharge. These inventors include Americans Aries M. DeGeus, MIT Professor Eugene Mallove, a former U.S. Air Force Reservist we only know as "Danny", and a Russian name Dimitri Petronov. The fifth inventor still works for Uncle Sam and is not allowed to give us his name or details, but he vows to write a tell-all book when he retires and expatriates himself in 2 years. He too is very angry. Now if you Google the above names, along with the key words of "Inventor, plasma battery, energy, technology" you will find that two of these inventors have been murdered and the other two have simply vanished over a year ago. Why?"

The answer to why is that (a) there is no shortage of energy, (b) there is enough technology available to design and build low cost power generators to power virtually every machine you can think of and (c) it is safe and sustainable.

Dimitri Petronov simply vanished. He had designed, created and used a small [shoebox sized thorium plasma battery that powered his house and all the appliances. He was murdered.

Slingshot water purifier: It can save millions

Slingshot water purifier: It can save millions | SMART INNOVATIONS | Scoop.it

Dean Kamen's slingshot water purifier:

Inside the big red box sits a smaller one, about the size of a dorm fridge, called a Slingshot.

It was developed by Kamen, the mastermind behind dozens of medical-equipment inventions and, most famously, the Segway personal transportation device.

Kamen is the closest thing to a modern-day Thomas Edison. He holds hundreds of patents, and his creations have improved countless lives. His current projects include a robotic prosthetic arm for DARPA and a Stirling engine that generates affordable electricity by using “anything that burns” for fuel.

The Slingshot, more than 10 years in the making, could have a bigger impact than all of his other inventions combined.

Using a process called vapor compression distillation, a single Slingshot can purify more than 250,000 liters of water per year, enough to satisfy the needs of about 300 people. And it can do so with any water source—sewage, seawater, chemical waste—no matter how dirty.

Via Sepp Hasslberger
Arun Shrivastava's insight:

Could be a solution for India. However, one rider: since Coke has tied up with Kamen, I doubt it will be cheap. I have zero trust in Coke and Pepsi.

Yet, the design is superb and I am sure of the price is right, every village would like to have one.

All Our Patent Are Belong To You - Tesla Motors open sources its patents! | SMART INNOVATIONS | Scoop.it

Yesterday, there was a wall of Tesla patents in the lobby of our Palo Alto headquarters. That is no longer the case. They have been removed, in the spirit of the open source movement, for the advancement of electric vehicle technology.

Tesla Motors was created to accelerate the advent of sustainable transport. If we clear a path to the creation of compelling electric vehicles, but then lay intellectual property landmines behind us to inhibit others, we are acting in a manner contrary to that goal. Tesla will not initiate patent lawsuits against anyone who, in good faith, wants to use our technology.

Data Highlights - 46: Denmark, Portugal, and Spain Leading the World in Wind Power | EPI

Data Highlights - 46: Denmark, Portugal, and Spain Leading the World in Wind Power | EPI | SMART INNOVATIONS | Scoop.it
Arun Shrivastava's insight:

Britain and Germany with combined population of 145 million generate 8% of electricity needs from wind. With more advanced and compact 'wind vortex' generators with low profile, it should be possible to scale up wind energy even faster. The best thing about vortex generator is that almost the entire plant is essentially sheet metal work given shape that creates powerful vortex inside which turns the turbine blades directly connected to generator. The result is high efficiency [high conversion rate] with least adverse environmental impact.

From the same source, great news from China. "Once China’s Renewable Energy Law established the development framework for renewables in 2005, the stage was set for wind’s exponential growth. Wind generating capacity more than doubled each year from 2006 to 2009 and has since increased by nearly 40 percent annually, to reach 91 gigawatts by the end of 2013 (1 gigawatt = 1,000 megawatts). Over 80 percent of this world-leading wind capacity is now feeding electricity to the grid.

Wind generation in 2013 could have been even higher, by an estimated 10 percent, but for the problem known as curtailment—when wind turbines are stopped because the grid cannot handle any more electricity. To help reduce curtailment and reach the official 2020 goal of 200 grid-connected gigawatts, China is building the world’s largest ultra-high-voltage transmission system. The raft of projects now under construction will connect the windier north and west to population centers in the central and eastern provinces."

Solar Gas Technology: A New Hope For Energy Security? - Revolution-Green

Solar Gas Technology: A New Hope For Energy Security? - Revolution-Green | SMART INNOVATIONS | Scoop.it
Solar Gas, Solargas, energy, India, new energy, energy savings
Arun Shrivastava's insight:

SUN GAS, LIQUID SUNGAS, SOLAR GAS MAY BE IN THE MARKET SOON.

The study was funded by the Australian Government and undertaken by CSIRO in collaboration with the Solar Energy Corporation of India. The study also developed a concept design for a pilot scale Solar Gas facility and identified numerous potential host sites suitable for such a pilot project in India. [This is from Australian Embassy Press Release in Delhi]

The technology is based on combining sun ray, water and gas. The process "concentrates the sun’s rays to drive a reaction between water and natural gas which stores solar energy in the form of chemical bonds. The Solar Gas can then be used to produce high-efficiency electricity in a gas engine or turbine. Mirrors  focus solar energy onto a series of metal pipes, which creates temperatures of around 800°C inside them. Through these pipes a  flow of natural gas is mixed with something else. This ‘something else’ can be steam or carbon dioxide – both pretty common ingredients, suited to different situations."

The technology, as another report says was first developed by Australians [CSIRO] but another report from financial analysts says that the US Department of Energy is readying to roll out solar gas [or sun gas] in the USA.

http://csirosolarblog.com/tag/natural-gas/

The Times of India also reported the development December 16, 2013

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/hyderabad/Solar-Gas-technology-a-hope-for-energy-security-in-India/articleshow/27474916.cms

The brief ToI report here: "HYDERABAD: A new study has found that the exciting new Solar Gas technology could help India's efforts towards achieving energy security. Solar Gas technology was developed by Australia's national science agency, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO).

It concentrates the sun's rays to drive a reaction between water and natural gas which stores solar energy in the form of chemical bonds. The Solar Gas can then be used to produce high-efficiency electricity in a gas engine or turbine.

"More importantly for India it can also be used to produce hydrogen for industrial use, petrochemical applications and fertilizer manufacture, and to provide cleaner transport fuels," according to a press release from the Australian High Commission, India.

Radical new liquid gas 20-times more powerful than natural gas ... yet cuts greenhouse pollution by 20% ... with full potential to power the entire continent ...

This breakthrough fuel could reduce or even eliminate dangerous fracking in our backyards. Even better, it could make early investors extremely rich by the end of 2014!

"[This Technology] could replace all the petroleum
consumed today in the United States."

— J. Davidson
Engineering Professor,
University Of Minnesota

Screwy-looking wind turbine makes little noise and a big claim | SMART INNOVATIONS | Scoop.it

Although it's getting increasingly common to see solar panels on the roofs of homes, household wind turbines are still a fairly rare sight.

New energy source: Blacklight announces sustained production of enormous electrical power from water plasma

New energy source: Blacklight announces sustained production of enormous electrical power from water plasma | SMART INNOVATIONS | Scoop.it

BlackLight Power, Inc. today announces that it achieved sustained electricity production from a primary new energy source by using photovoltaic technology to transform brilliant plasma, with power comprising millions of watts of light, directly into electricity.

By applying a very high current through its water-based solid fuel in a process called Solid Fuel-Catalyst-Induced-Hydrino-Transition (SF-CIHT) technology, water ignites into brilliant plasma, a bright flash of extraordinary optical power that has a power density of over a million times that of any prior controllable reaction.

Remarkably, the light emitted from the plasma is nearly a perfect spectral equivalent of the Sun, but at 50,000 times the intensity.

BlackLight Power has now successfully converted the brilliant plasma directly into electricity using photovoltaic cells (solar cells) which have been increasingly perfected to convert the Sun spectrum into electricity for more than five decades costing an estimated $1 trillion.
