NASA: A Nuclear Reactor To Replace Your Water Heater

NASA: A Nuclear Reactor To Replace Your Water Heater | SMART INNOVATIONS | Scoop.it
NASA scientists are researching low-energy nuclear reactors that can be employed in the household.

And it does not use hot fusion, the union of hydrogen atoms into larger elements that powers the sun and stars.

Instead, a low-energy nuclear reactor (LENR) uses common, stable elements like nickel, carbon, and hydrogen to produce stable products like copper or nitrogen, along with heat and electricity.

“It has the demonstrated ability to produce excess amounts of energy, cleanly, without hazardous ionizing radiation, without producing nasty waste,” said Joseph Zawodny, a senior research scientist with NASA’s Langley Research Center.

Via Sepp Hasslberger
Arun Shrivastava's insight:

Dr. Coleman, former intelligence analyst with MI-5, had said about a decade ago that European elite do not want cold fusion technology; they will keep pushing coal, hydro and nuclear. The elite want to extract as much as they can by controlling key sectors of the economy like food and energy.

And that's why they have tried to control radical technologies. However, as Sepp says here, this technology may be commercialized soon.

This technology could have been introduced as early as 1985.

Sepp Hasslberger's curator insight, February 24, 2013 5:06 PM

Gone are the days when the media crucified Pons and Fleischman for having reported on excess energy found in their experiments. "Cold fusion" has got a facelift and a different name: low-energy nuclear reaction.

When Forbes cites a NASA scientist on the possibility of developing this technology, its commercial availability must be just around the corner...

Sun-powered desalination for villages in India

Sun-powered desalination for villages in India | SMART INNOVATIONS | Scoop.it
Around the world, there is more salty groundwater than fresh, drinkable groundwater. For example, 60 percent of India is underlain by salty water -- and much of that area is not served by an electric grid that could run conventional reverse-osmosis desalination plants. Sun-powered desalination could deliver clean water for off-grid villages.
Arun Shrivastava's insight:

Simple technology, that will change the way Indians have approached the problem of safe drinking water for all. Note that the research was funded by Jain Irrigation Systems, an Indian company that builds and installs solar-power systems, and sponsored by the Tata Center for Technology and Design at MIT. Just one small point in the article with which I differ. India's water problem is not because shortage of water; it is because of Government's mismanagement of water resources.

Arun Shrivastava's insight:

Sepp alerted me, saying 'The Russians have had this technology since the 1990s, and they apparently sold some to the Chinese.
So the Chinese joined the club and made their own further development...'

So, they have had deep hi-tech military collaboration for sometime.

"The Shkval is fired from the standard 533-mm torpedo tube at a depth of up to 328 ft (100 m). The torpedo exits the tube at 50 knots (93 kmh) and then ignites the rocket motor, propelling the weapon to speeds four to five times faster than other conventional torpedoes. The weapon reportedly has an 80 percent kill probability at a range of 7,655 yd (7,000 m)."  Read on.

Salt Water Powered Car Gets European Approval

Salt Water Powered Car Gets European Approval | SMART INNOVATIONS | Scoop.it

With salt water as its fuel, which it converts to electricity, it has a top speed of over 200 mph and has now been approved for public road use in Europe.

A car which uses an electrolyte flow cell power system is now certified for use on European roads. The car is called the Quant e-Sportlimousine, which made its debut at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show.

Not only can this car run on salt water, but it is claimed that the car has peak power of 920 horsepower (680 kW), 0-62 mph (100 km/h) in 2.8 seconds and a top speed of 217.5 mph (350 km/h).

“The power density of the nanoFLOWCELL® at 600 W per kilogram or per litre is greater than any comparable system; five times greater, to be specific. That means you can drive five times further with our system than you can with a conventional battery system, including the most state-of-the-art lithium-ion batteries. The system is also extremely safe to operate and environmentally friendly. Most importantly, since there are almost no moving parts and it produces negligible waste heat, it has an efficiency of more than 80%. There has never been anything like it.”

Via Sepp Hasslberger

Thorium Plasma Battery Technology - Wrongly Top Secret? - Green Energy Reports - Open Salon | SMART INNOVATIONS | Scoop.it
Arun Shrivastava's insight:

THEFT OF THORIUM SANDS FROM INDIA

Why monazite sands were stolen and never probed although the stories hit the headlines many times. Thorium is the safest nuclear fuel and many scientists have designed, created and demonstrated safe and green nuclear energy. The author of this article says:

"Since 2006, five different inventors have designed, three have created, and two have demonstrated self-contained safe and green nuclear "plasma" batteries that can put out reliable and stable power for 5-10 years - without a single recharge. These inventors include Americans Aries M. DeGeus, MIT Professor Eugene Mallove, a former U.S. Air Force Reservist we only know as "Danny", and a Russian name Dimitri Petronov. The fifth inventor still works for Uncle Sam and is not allowed to give us his name or details, but he vows to write a tell-all book when he retires and expatriates himself in 2 years. He too is very angry. Now if you Google the above names, along with the key words of "Inventor, plasma battery, energy, technology" you will find that two of these inventors have been murdered and the other two have simply vanished over a year ago. Why?"

The answer to why is that (a) there is no shortage of energy, (b) there is enough technology available to design and build low cost power generators to power virtually every machine you can think of and (c) it is safe and sustainable.

Dimitri Petronov simply vanished. He had designed, created and used a small [shoebox sized thorium plasma battery that powered his house and all the appliances. He was murdered.

Slingshot water purifier: It can save millions

Slingshot water purifier: It can save millions | SMART INNOVATIONS | Scoop.it

Dean Kamen's slingshot water purifier:

Inside the big red box sits a smaller one, about the size of a dorm fridge, called a Slingshot.

It was developed by Kamen, the mastermind behind dozens of medical-equipment inventions and, most famously, the Segway personal transportation device.

Kamen is the closest thing to a modern-day Thomas Edison. He holds hundreds of patents, and his creations have improved countless lives. His current projects include a robotic prosthetic arm for DARPA and a Stirling engine that generates affordable electricity by using “anything that burns” for fuel.

The Slingshot, more than 10 years in the making, could have a bigger impact than all of his other inventions combined.

Using a process called vapor compression distillation, a single Slingshot can purify more than 250,000 liters of water per year, enough to satisfy the needs of about 300 people. And it can do so with any water source—sewage, seawater, chemical waste—no matter how dirty.

Via Sepp Hasslberger
Arun Shrivastava's insight:

Could be a solution for India. However, one rider: since Coke has tied up with Kamen, I doubt it will be cheap. I have zero trust in Coke and Pepsi.

Yet, the design is superb and I am sure of the price is right, every village would like to have one.

All Our Patent Are Belong To You - Tesla Motors open sources its patents! | SMART INNOVATIONS | Scoop.it

Yesterday, there was a wall of Tesla patents in the lobby of our Palo Alto headquarters. That is no longer the case. They have been removed, in the spirit of the open source movement, for the advancement of electric vehicle technology.

Tesla Motors was created to accelerate the advent of sustainable transport. If we clear a path to the creation of compelling electric vehicles, but then lay intellectual property landmines behind us to inhibit others, we are acting in a manner contrary to that goal. Tesla will not initiate patent lawsuits against anyone who, in good faith, wants to use our technology.

China's Future Submarine Could Go The Speed Of Sound

China's Future Submarine Could Go The Speed Of Sound | SMART INNOVATIONS | Scoop.it
The submarine of the future may come to America in a super fast bubble, traveling under water. Researchers at China's Harbin Institute of Technology developed a new concept for submarine “supercavitation,” where an underwater vessel creates a pocket of air around itself. Inside this bubble, the submarine can travel much faster without friction of water creating drag and slowing it down. Theoretically, a supercavitated vessel using rocket engines could travel inside that air pocket at almost the speed of sound.
Arun Shrivastava's insight:

China has developed a technology that allows a submarine to travel at the speed of sound. The point to note is that the speed of sound in water is about 1500 metres per second against 332 metres in air. [Other parameters also affect the speed like density and temperature] The basic principle is to create an air pocket ahead of the submarine thereby reducing the drag. Effectively, the submarine travels inside this air pocket  or super-cavity to achieve the speed. Even if it can travel at 332 metres per second, it is awfully fast. Details are not available.
