According to current trends renewable energy sources will collectively overtake gas as the world's second-largest source of energy by the end of this decade

Renewables -- hydro, solar, geothermal, biofuel and wind -- are the fastest-growing energy sector, and an estimated increase in generation capacity of 40 percent over the next five years will mean that by 2018 a quarter of all energy generated globally will come from one of these sources. The majority of that quarter -- 17 percent -- will come from hydropower.

Wind farm development in the Highlands

Planning decisions announced for two proposed wind farms.
Murray Allan's insight:

The Tom Nan Clach wind farm, which will be developed by Nanclach Ltd, is expected to have 17 turbines and have a generating capacity of up to 39.1MW.  The farm could power the equivalent of more than 18,000 homes in the area.

Progress on Scottish Islands Renewables Project

Key conclusions are:

Renewable generation, including onshore wind, wave and tidal, on the Scottish Islands could make a significant contribution to the UK’s 2020 renewables targets.

The cost of deploying renewables is higher than comparable projects on the mainland, due to the expensive transmission links that would be required.

For over two years ScottishPower Renewables has been part of a working group seeking to develop an industry recognised Wind Turbine Technician training course in both Dumfries & Galloway and Ayr colleges. As well as the recently launched course at Ayr College, Dumfries & Galloway College aim to launch a further course later this year.
