£10.6m for oil & gas innovation

New centre of excellence in Aberdeen to transform industry and academic collaboration.

The new Aberdeen-based centre, funded by Scottish Funding Council and supported by Scottish Enterprise and Highlands & Islands Enterprise, will bring together more than 2,300 oil and gas operators and service companies with 12 Scottish universities with more than 450 academic staff and researchers working primarily on oil and gas specific technologies.

Spittal Hill wind farm could provide £27m boost to local area

A planning application outlining proposals for the revised Spittal Hill wind farm, located between 2 and 3 km north east of the village of Spittal in Caithness has been submitted to Highland Council, and is awaiting assignment of a case reference ...

On top of the community benefit fund, Spittal Hill Windfarm Ltd has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with North Highland College UHI, to put in place and deliver £40,000 of one–off funding on a range of programmes which will tackle youth unemployment in the area should the project gain planning consent, highlighting the developers commitment to boost the local economy, and create employment opportunities for local people.

We are using more and more sources of energy to provide power in the UK, but what are they and how have they changed over time?

In 1970, coal accounted for about two-thirds of all electricity. Last year, it accounted for less than half, although for a number of years prior to that it made up one-third.

Scottish offshore wind farms to be world’s third largest

Thousands of jobs forecast from billion pound investment.
Murray Allan's insight:

Moray Offshore Renewables Limited (MORL) and the Beatrice Offshore Windfarm Limited (BOWL), together will be the world’s third largest offshore wind farm, with up to 326 wind turbines. The developments, sited off the Caithness coast, will be capable of generating up to 1,866 MW of electricity, enough to power over one million homes, and will be worth up to £2.5 billion to the Scottish economy.

Wind farm to provide energy for 50,900 homes

The Bhlaraidh wind farm, which will be developed by SSE Generation Limited, is to have 32 turbines with a generating capacity of up to 108MW.  The farm, located 4km north-west of Invermoriston, could power the equivalent of approximately 50,900 homes in the area.

The Oil and Gas Analytical Bulletin summarises new experimental statistics which show that exports of crude oil and natural gas liquids (NGLs), worth almost £18 billion in 2012. Refined petroleum products and natural gas were worth an additional combined value of £12 billion.

Evidence is welcomed from all interested parties. The Commission have a site hosted via Robert Gordon University where an online survey can be found. Please complete the survey by Friday 29 November 2013. The Commission will produce a full report in Spring 2014.
