Progress on Scottish Islands Renewables Project

Key conclusions are:

Renewable generation, including onshore wind, wave and tidal, on the Scottish Islands could make a significant contribution to the UK’s 2020 renewables targets.

The cost of deploying renewables is higher than comparable projects on the mainland, due to the expensive transmission links that would be required.

European Offshore wind Development in Aberdeen Bay - the development consists of 11 wind turbines and their connecting cables, sited between two and 4.5 km off the Aberdeenshire coast, capable of generating up to 100 MW, providing enough energy to meet the needs of over 49,000 homes – almost half of the homes in Aberdeen.

Preferred bidders announced in UK’s £1bn Carbon Capture Competition

Peterhead Project in Aberdeenshire, Scotland – a project which involves capturing around 90% of the carbon dioxide from part of the existing gas fired power station at Peterhead before transporting it and storing it in a depleted gas field beneath the North Sea. The project involves Shell and SSE.

Met Office scientists will be at Windpower Monthly’s 2nd annual Wind Resource Assessment 2013 in London from 19 to 21 March 2013.

It's not enough to understand only the climatology, it's also vital to understand the risks associated with wind assessment in relation to the overall return on investment of any project and the impact of wind resource on a company's renewable energy business.."

New berth for European Marine Energy Centre

£4.1 million for Orkney test base as FM welcomes EU Energy Commissioner.

European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) in Orkney will get £3 million for a new grid-connected testing berth.  EMEC will also lead a £1.1 million project to develop the potential of support vessels used in the marine industry around Orkney and the Pentland Firth.

Wind farm approved

Kilgallioch wind farm could power more than 130,000 homes.
Murray Allan's insight:

The Kilgallioch Wind Farm, in Dumfries and Galloway and South Ayrshire, is expected to have 96 turbines and have a generating capacity of up to 288MW.

The developers will also pay in to a fund to support local environmental and energy related projects, and fund the employment of two Countryside Rangers for the promotion, payment and management of the Southern Upland Way over the 25 years the wind farm is operational.

For over two years ScottishPower Renewables has been part of a working group seeking to develop an industry recognised Wind Turbine Technician training course in both Dumfries & Galloway and Ayr colleges. As well as the recently launched course at Ayr College, Dumfries & Galloway College aim to launch a further course later this year.
