Global inequality is even worse than we thought - here's why | Everything Is Broken. Let's fix it. | Scoop.it
The gap between rich and poor across the globe is even wider than we currently think, according to a new analysis. Official estimates of inequality only take into account the money that the tax man sees, according to a recent paper by economists, Annette Alstadsæter, Niels Johannesen and Gabriel Zucman.

The societal cost of heroin use disorder in the United States

The societal cost of heroin use disorder in the United States | Everything Is Broken. Let's fix it. | Scoop.it
Objective Heroin use in the United States has reached epidemic proportions. The objective of this paper is to estimate the annual societal cost of heroin use disorder in the United States in 2015 US dollars. Methods An analytic model was created that included incarceration and crime; treatment for heroin use disorder; chronic infectious diseases (HIV, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, and Tuberculosis) and their treatments; treatment of neonatal abstinence syndrome; lost productivity; and death by heroin overdose. Results Using literature-based estimates to populate the model, the cost of heroin use disorder was estimated to be $51.2 billion in 2015 US dollars ($50,799 per heroin user). One-way sensitivity analyses showed that overall cost estimates were sensitive to the number of heroin users, cost of HCV treatment, and cost of incarcerating heroin users. Conclusion The annual cost of heroin use disorder to society in the United States emphasizes the need for sustained investment in healthcare and non-healthcare related strategies that reduce the likelihood of abuse and provide care and support for users to overcome the disorder.

The world is headed towards irreversible collapse.

The world is headed towards irreversible collapse. The World GDP peaked in 2014 and has been declining ever since. This was predicted back in 1973 by the Limits to Growth computer models done at MIT. Based on their Business as usual model the worlds industrial output would peak somewhere around 2015. And 40 years later their models seem to be disturbingly accurate. It all goes downhill from here everyone. I don't know how else to put it. Capitalism has reached its resource limits and is now experiencing diminishing returns. And according to the models predictions human population will begin to die-off somewhere around 2030 and go into full reversal. Are leaders were warned about this back in 1992. When Some 1,700 of the world's leading scientists, including the majority of Nobel laureates in the sciences, issued their "Warning to Humanity". Unfortunately the scientist were all ignored.

National Counterterrorism Center handbook lists "dissatisfaction with job" as a potential sign of extremism | Everything Is Broken. Let's fix it. | Scoop.it
Countering Violent Extremism (CVE) initiatives rest on the core assumption that it is possible to detect and stop violent extremists before they carry out attacks, through theories of radicalization which identify behaviors that are thought to be “indicators” or “risk factors.” This logic is the driving force behind the National Counterterrorism Center’s (NCTC) annual handbook for law enforcement agencies, which provides guidance for spotting these indicators - from legitimate calls to violence, to more troubling grey areas, such as “expressing frustration with employment situation."

Cindy Burnside Peterson's curator insight, March 26, 8:28 PM

When I was in college -- I had enough $ for lunch to get an apple or a milk -- that was it.  The rest of my money was for gas (I commuted) and bills.  My pell grant and student loans covered my tuition and books only.  It's sad to see that 20 years later, it is even worse for the kids.

Diamaris Rios's curator insight, March 27, 8:31 PM
I chose to scoop this article because this is a growing issue within higher education. This is a constant battle these students endure on a daily basis. They have decided to further their education but still struggle to pay for rent/feed themselves. The author does a great job illustrating the real life problems these students go through. Although financial aid does help, it is important to know that "Pell Grants, the money the government provides to low-income students to pay for college, hasn’t kept up with the rising cost of college, let alone living expenses." I believe CI has done a great job dealing with food insecurity within its campus. They have also done a great job promoting their food pantry.

A multimillion-dollar campaign to stifle protest in universities. As far-right speakers face loud student opposition at their university speaking gigs, conservative lawmakers in several states are introducing legislation that cracks down on protesters. As uncovered by UnKoch My Campus’ Ralph Wilson, numerous states have borrowed their so-called “campus free speech” bills from the rightwing Goldwater Institute, which is funded by conservative plutocrats including Charles Koch and the Mercer family.
