Remembering "Green" - An Orangutan's journey - Winner of Best Short Documentary - A 2013 MUST AGENDA

Her name is Green, she is alone in a world that doesn't belong to her. She is a female orang-utan, victim of deforestation and resource exploitation.
This film is an emotional journey with Green's final days. It is a visual ride presenting the treasures of rainforest biodiversity and the devastating impacts of logging and land clearing for palm oil plantations.
The film "Green" is a 48 min long documentary on the Indonesian rainforest, deforestation and orangutan extinction. It is a silent film (without narration) which addresses itself both to the Indonesians and the consumers of wood/paper/palm oil around the world. VanAllen's insight:

I never forget my initial watching of the extremely moving and informative documentary GREEN but I am also always extremely grateful to be reminded of it when somebody else posts it. I wish everybody in the world could watch it and be equally moved to try to take action before it is too late.

pdjmoo's curator insight, December 31, 2012 11:01 PM

One of those documentaries that I keep revisiting...moves me to the core...and reminds me that we have other species on the planet suffering, other than human. During 2013  we must allow ourselves to fully embrace our natural world as part of us not separate from us.  The quality of human life depends on the health and well being of nature and our environment and we are disappearing it at an alarming rate, often beyond return. We cannot keep destroying the very life that makes up the intricate and unfathomable biosphere we live in without dire and irreversible consequences. This film keeps me right on the leading edge of activism.

To make way for money, the forrests that are home to Orangutans, are dissappearing..tragedy and death for our wildlife.

Endangered Wildlife
Some animals are so close to extinction that we must step in. It is largely humankind who have driven them to the brink.

FRACKING THREATENS HUMAN HEALTH, THE ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE: The world’s quest for cheaper fuel in the form of natural gas is coming at a much higher price than fossil fuel industry officials want to acknowledge. Perhpas we need to listen and learn from the mistakes of others.

Christian Allié's curator insight, January 3, 12:05 AM

........."""""""..........

{ ... ]

......  At present habitats protect 67 percent of the coastline," said the study, published in the journal Nature Climate Change.

"Habitat loss would double the extent of coastline highly exposed... and the number of poor families, elderly people and total property highly exposed to hazards would also double."

In addition, rising seas caused by global warming will drive up the exposure, the study warned.

The team calculated what would happen under a common scenario for warming, known as A2, under which Earth's average surface temperature would rise by 2.0-5.4 degrees Celsius (3.6-9.7 degrees Fahrenheit) this century.

Around two million people, and property worth some 500 billion, would be in "high hazard" areas -- a red line that stretches around most of the Gulf and Atlantic coasts and parts of San Francisco Bay.

That exposure would almost double if habitat defences are removed, because more people inland are placed at risk.

Arkema says the new study can guide policymakers as to which areas are most exposed and which habitats are to be nurtured. Twenty-three of the United States' 25 most populated counties lie on the coast.

"The traditional approach to protecting towns and cities has been to 'harden' shorelines," the paper notes.

"Although engineered solutions are necessary and desirable in some contexts, they can be expensive to build and maintain, and construction may impair recreation, enhance erosion, degrade water quality and reduce the production of fisheries."

Experts have long pointed out the folly of building homes and businesses on exposed coast and stripping away natural shields against seas.

Namibia: Poachers’ barbaric acts against wildlife on the rise

IT is not just the stock theft figures for 2013 that are staggering, but the poaching of wildlife is just as worrisome and one beleaguered farmer from Omaruru can vouch for that.
Adrian Lang of Okapekaha last month alone lost more than 30 animals that were trapped in snares and hacked to pieces for their meat. It was last month too when the gruesome poacher bush veld abattoirs were discovered in remote areas of the farm. Lang, over the past weekend, however, made even more gruesome discoveries of poaching on his farm.

The Massive Annual Migrating Songbird Massacre in the Mediterranean - Poaching

The Massive Annual Migrating Songbird Massacre in the Mediterranean - Poaching | Endangered Wildlife | Scoop.it

JULY 24, 2013 - FOCUSING ON WILDLIFE

Each year, millions of songbirds are killed for food, for profit or just for the joy of shooting something, as they move from their winter grounds in Africa to their summer breeding territories in Europe.

In Egypt, hundreds of miles of nets cover the entire coastline, catching almost every bird that makes its way to shore from across the Mediterranean Sea. In Albania, hunters set up dozens of hunting blinds inside wildlife refuges while officials turn a blind eye.

In Cyprus, trees are outfitted with glue-covered lime sticks that catch birds like flies on flypaper as they attempt to land, breaking wings as the birds struggle to free themselves. The problem is widespread and growing as new methods and technology increase the deadly toll of the annual slaughter.... http://focusingonwildlife.com/news/massive-bird-slaughter-around-the-mediterranean-shocking-photos/
