Some animals are so close to extinction that we must step in. It is largely humankind who have driven them to the brink.

Super-rare carnivore photographed in Yosemite after missing for nearly a century | Endangered Wildlife | Scoop.it
For years, biologists believed the Sierra Nevada fox was down to a single population of around 20 animals in California's Lassen Volcanic National Park. But then in 2010, biologists found a small population near Sonora Pass. Now, more good news: last week, scientists documented the first Sierra Nevada fox in Yosemite National Park in nearly 100 years.

How a brilliant-green sea slug manages to live for months at a time 'feeding' on sunlight, like a plant, is clarified in a recent study. The authors present the first direct evidence that the emerald green sea slug's chromosomes have some genes that come from the algae it eats.

IUCN - Remember the rangers: 31 July is World Ranger Day

IUCN - Remember the rangers: 31 July is World Ranger Day | Endangered Wildlife | Scoop.it
Today we celebrate World Ranger Day. We commemorate those rangers all over the world who have died in the course of their duties but also those who risk their lives every day at the forefront of conservation. While some are exposed to hazardous environmental conditions such as floods or dangerous animals, others are targeted because they stand up to poachers, drug warlords and criminals. This year alone, at least 31 were murdered, some under the most horrific circumstances.

Alors, l'arrêté préfectoral pourrait faire interdire la pêche au poulpe sur une partie des côtes méditerranéennes entre juin et septembre. C'est le seul moment de l'année où la femelle vient pondre dans les rochers.

Invasion of the oil palm: western Africa's native son returns, threatening great apes | Endangered Wildlife | Scoop.it
As palm oil producers increasingly look to Africa’s tropical forests as suitable candidates for their next plantations, primate scientists are sounding the alarm about the destruction of ape habitat that can go hand in hand with oil palm expansion. A recent study sought to take those warnings a step further by quantifying the overlap in suitable oil palm land with current ape habitat.
