Psychopaths do not lack empathy, rather they can switch it on at will, according to new research, which could explain how psychopaths can be both callous and charming.

This makes a lot of sense.  Probably on a continuum with normal -- as we probably need ways to avoid the mirror neurons getting overloaded in very emotional environments.

Amazing

Mary Reilley Clark's curator insight, July 1, 2013 11:11 AM

Would this work in middle and high school?  I have so many students who would, at least initially, be motivated to work online to earn badges.  I foresee issues of authentication of work, but there is something worth exploring here.

Yes, this would definitely work in all levels of education. K-12 and adult.

This is not how we typically see China displayed on a map. On most maps China is located under Kazakhstan and Mongolia.   Maps can shape our perspective on certain issues.  This map is clearly stating that China is important, more important than the surrounding countries.

Science Across Virtual Institutes - SAVI

Science Across Virtual Institutes - SAVI | Eudaimonia | Scoop.it

From the website

"Formally launched in January, 2013, the Finland-USA Science Across Virtual Institutes (SAVI) collaboration connects sixteen research groups  in the Finland and the US in an effort carry out significant advances in education and the learning sciences.  These groups have formed eight team pairs, each representing both nations.  Each team has different research objectives and goals, but all of the teams share a vision to foster deep and immersive engagement in learners and learner communities.

"The SAVI’s intellectual core can be defined in terms of the diverse ways that learner engagement is marshalled, understood, theoretically specified, and tested.  (NSF currently supports several SAVI efforts internationally; SAVI represents a novel mechanism for research investment that leverages existing and new collaborations that converge on common lines of inquiry – in this case, the questions of deep learner engagement.)

"Investigators from both countries met at a workshop at the Finnish Embassy in Washington DC, in June 2012, under the aegis of the US National Science Foundation, Tekes, the Finnish Agency for Technology and Innovation, and the Academy of Finland.  The workshop arose from collaborations led primarily by Roy Pea of Stanford University and Hannele Niemi of Helsinki University.  The three federal funding bodies agreed to consider proposals for collaboration, in accordance with the practices that they each represent.

"In addition to the underlying research and development in learning innovations that the projects will share, the SAVI features opportunities for early career researchers and teacher researchers to visit partner sites in Finland and the US and a series of webinars and short courses of interest to researchers, practitioners, and policy-makers."

The future of social security in Europe: shared knowledge and responsibilities

Between 2011 and 2012, the All-Poland Alliance of Trade Unions (OPZZ) carried out an EU-funded project comparing social security legislation in Poland, Bulgaria and Portugal.

The project, entitled "The future of social security in Europe: shared knowledge and responsibilities", focused on the application of EU Regulations on the rights of mobile workers and pensioners.

It dealt in particular with the coordination of social security systems as put in place by Member States, as well as with the role and participation of trade unions in the process.

The project partners were:

☞ Confederação Geral dos Trabalhadores Portugueses – Intersindical Nacional (CGTP-IN) from Portugal

☞ Confederation of Independent Trade Unions in Bulgaria (CITUB – KNSB)

The comparison of national legislations in Poland, Bulgaria and Portugal allowed project partners to:

✔ improve their knowledge of the social security schemes in their own country;

✔ become aware of the country differences;

✔ comprehend the coordination of social protection laws throughout Europe.

This series of maps shows the cultural and legal differences around the world that impact access to abortion and birth control.

Shelby Porter's curator insight, September 21, 2013 5:18 PM

Another example of how the United States allows their citizens freedom to make a choice. Americans are allowed to choose contraception types, take birth control and get an abortion if they want to. Some countries only allow abortions if a child is conceived by rape. And then there are countries like El Salvador where an abortion is illegal and no one is permitted to get one under any circumstance. It is interesting to see all the different countries and their legal beliefs on these matters, and how it varies from state to state in the U.S. It gives the reader a little insight into the cultual and legal beliefs of the countries shown.

Lauren Sellers's curator insight, May 29, 2014 1:00 AM

i noticed Africa is really against abortion and thats probably do to the lack of medical care that can be provided by the country. Most contries are ok with birth control. I also learned from these maps that condoms are actually free in some countries and in others not even available for purchase.
