(From the article): Don’t wait for senior leader support. I heard a talk almost 30 years ago that still inspires me today. It was from A. L. Patterson. He challenged his listeners with this simple message:

Start where you are. Use what you’ve got. Do what you can.

15 Big Differences Between Acting Like a Boss and BEING a Leader | TerryStarbucker.com | "employee engagement enhancement" | Scoop.it

In fast paced, high stress business environments it can be all too easy sometimes for leaders to slip into what I call “Boss Man” mode.

What I mean by that is that they stop being a leader, and start acting like a (bad) boss.

A boss who supervises a staff.

The staff reports to the boss, just like it says on the organizational chart.

And they do exactly what the boss says, because, of course,  “He’s the boss!“

Some nice distinctions.

(From the article): Keep this list handy, or better yet, post it on your personal bulletin board as you continue on your leadership journey, so you can recognize any Boss Man tendencies and stop them in their tracks.

BE a leader, not a boss!

AlGonzalezinfo's curator insight, January 9, 2013 3:11 PM

This can come across as a bit too critical, but, the truth is, we can all slip into this mode and this list can be a job aid on how to continue leading and being as good of a boss as we can be.  :)

Sorting fact from fiction is a regular challenge faced by most business owners, and in the area of employee engagement, a reality check is vital before taking any action designed to improve employee engagement levels in a business.

Acting from gut feeling, the collective invalidated wisdom of various business commentators, or in haste without proper diagnosis the current state of affairs, are all likely to see a business owner make changes according to mythical solutions that will not result in the required productivity improvements.

This excellent article, suggests that many business owners could make more successful attempts to improve employee enagagement with their businesses if they first recognised the myths that abound in this arena, and it identifies 10 such myths and provides a reality check for each.
