In organizational settings – and particularly in corporate environments – a principle like trust tends to come across as a hollow promise for hollow commitments.  At best trust is organizationally experienced as perhaps a nice aspiration, but unlikely. At worst, it is experienced as a daily dose of cynicism.

Employee Engagement 101: Does Your Culture Value Humans? | "employee engagement enhancement" | Scoop.it
What’s the distance between your company culture and your brand? Answer: There shouldn’t be any. Wow, here is a provocative statement.

Our mercantile minds have become so optimized to derive maximum margins that we tend to forget that it all starts with us, ahem, humans.

But why trust me on this. Just google Steve Jobs and/ or Richard Branson, or a myriad of other thinkers about what they have to say.

In the beginning there are neurons firing in each or our brains deriving a new idea or insight. Everything else comes later. So, value your humans. And, btw, they are not "resources" they are creative agents of change - if allowed to be.

German novelist and playwright Gustav Freytag wanted to understand how storytelling impacted the human psyche. The best leaders are definitely story-tellers?

Matthew Farmer's curator insight, January 27, 1:53 AM

Powerful stories are told with conviction and the most powerful are often told on the basis of personal experience.

Learning to articulate your powerful personal learning experiences as stories will not only help you to reflect on your learning and therefore make it more powerful, but also help you share your learning with others and influence them to take action.  Leadership indeed!

James Hutchison's curator insight, January 28, 11:01 AM

Of course you reach people by telling stories - it's how we make sense out of life - you can give the theory but you have to provide real world examples and that's why we have stories. Stories help us understand life. But if you tell a story to teach a moral I would suggest that unless you live by that story's moral lesson it doesn't matter how many stories you tell - nobody will believe you. Telling a good story is one thing but having integrity is another.

(From the article): You are a servant leader when you focus on the needs of others before you consider your own. It's a longer-term approach to leadership, rather than a technique that you can adopt in specific situations. Therefore, you can use it with other leadership styles such as Transformational Leadership.

You can become a servant leader by working on these 10 characteristics:

Listening.Empathy.Healing.Awareness.Persuasion.Conceptualization.Foresight.Stewardship.Commitment to the growth of people.Building community.

Servant leaders are likely to have more engaged employees and enjoy better relationships with team members and other stakeholders than leaders who don't put the interests of others before their own.

Employee Engagement Is A Good Start...But Then What?

Employee Engagement Is A Good Start...But Then What? | "employee engagement enhancement" | Scoop.it

In a mere 0.47 seconds, Google returns about 20,200,000 results when searching the term ‘employee engagement.’ Obviously, it’s a hot topic. And, it should be.

Employee engagement is the willingness of employees to apply their “discretionary effort” toward their work. Elevated levels of employee engagement are positively correlated with better business results. Therefore, the higher level of engagement, the better the chances of meeting or exceeding company goals and operating results.

The topic of engagement has gathered so much momentum in the past few years that most HR leaders have moved away from the employee satisfaction surveys of the past, in favor of newer, more relevant employee engagement surveys. This makes perfect sense. Research continues to show not just the value of engaged employees, but also the danger of disengaged employees. The Gallup Organization’s research suggests that actively disengaged workers spread discord among colleagues and customers and thwart organizational performance.

How Do You Get People to Work Harder? Just Turn Them Loose

How Do You Get People to Work Harder? Just Turn Them Loose | "employee engagement enhancement" | Scoop.it

Here’s a fundamental question: How do you get people to work? Answering fundamentally, you form a contract with them consisting of a set amount of compensation and benefits in return for an equally set amount of work.

Less fundamental and more important (or at least more interesting) is this question – How do you get people to work harder on what matters most to you?

(From the article): As a leader, you do hold unique responsibility for ensuring there are opportunities for such exposure, for those on your team to work closely with others. But then, turn your people loose. Let them explore ways they can contribute differently within their own team and across departments or groups.

That’s how you break down silos, but it’s also how you give people the three hallmarks of engagement espoused by Dan Pink in Drive – autonomy, mastery, and purpose.
