Rise in monitoring of workers’ social media profiles predicted

Rise in monitoring of workers’ social media profiles predicted | Employee checks | Scoop.it
This Article written by: Nick Elvin Nearly a third of people would be happy for their employer to have access to their social media profiles, in exchange for a better work deal, a new report says. According to PwC, who carried out the research, this data could be used by employers to understand what motivates their workforce and the reasons why people might move jobs, as well as to improve employee well-being. PwC predicts that this kind of data monitoring of employees is set to rise over the next decade as by 2020, those born between 1980 and 1995 will form half of the global workforce, and bring with them their own attitudes to technology and personal data. The research indicates that younger people are more open to sharing their personal data with their employers, with 36% of ‘Generation Y’ workers saying they would be happy to do so. The report, entitled ‘The future of work: a journey to 2022’, is based on a worldwide survey of 10,000 workers and [...]

Social Envy - Does Facebook Cause Depression And Isolation in your workforce?

Social Envy - Does Facebook Cause Depression And Isolation in your workforce? | Employee checks | Scoop.it

Researchers have conducted tests that show that people who spend a lot of time scrolling on Facebook are more socially isolated and more frequently depressed than those who do not.

The question, of course, poses itself: are lonely people more drawn to social networks – or does constant surfing result in loneliness over time?

Via jean lievens, Arielle Mendelson
SP-Index's insight:

Could your employees be depressed or isolated because of their over use of social networks. Being able to identify pockets of low morale in your business is crucial for future success. Social isolation manifesting itself as a Facebook profile is not going to add any value to your customers, colleagues, suppliers, or brand. You can use SP Index to be more aware of your employees use of the web in order to offer support, education and improvements.

With teenagers being so into Facebook and Twitter, I want to show that it could have a really negative effect on your life style. People are always so hurt by what others say and do on social networking and it could lead them into a state of depression. Since you cannot see the person you are harming they dont know how badly the really are affecting them.
Arielle Mendelson's curator insight, May 24, 2013 2:08 PM

The question is, do lonely people turn to social media or does social media make people lonely?

The people who spend the most amount of time on social media have more feelings of isolation and depression than those who go on it for a quick look. People say the main reason they feel lonely after looking at Facebook is because of envy and the second reason is because of lack of responses. This has become such a large issue and has led to research being done because Facebook is used worldwide and anyone can feel envy.

SP-Index's insight:

Definitely agree with this - Credit checks do not demonstrate skill, cultural fit, ability to succeed. When recruiting you need to focus on cultural fit, behavioural matching, understanding the truth behind a CV. Online Social Profiling is far more relevant and accurate for pre-employment checks in the digital era.
