Problem Solving Versus Empathy

Problem Solving Versus Empathy | EMPATICUS | Scoop.it

A classical relationship problem is the dichotomy between solving a problem and providing empathy. If you really want to understand this, spend two minutes and watch the awesome "It's Not About The Nail" video below...

If you are an entrepreneur, CEO, or VC take a moment and think. Do you ever focus on “empathy” rather than “problem solving.” If you want to see an example of this in action, watch Jerry Colonna’s brilliant interview with Jason Calacanis. There’s a lot of incredible things on display in this interview, including plenty of empathy.

Pål Dobrin's insight:

Lovely to see the use of new technologies for empathy development. "Newsgames" has the potential of bringing understanding of real world situations other people find themselves in to our very own doorstep. There is no end to the possibility that this entails, just in bringing people closer by increasing empathy and compassion there is an enormous value. After all, we are all in it together.

Doctor, Shut Up and Listen

Doctor, Shut Up and Listen | EMPATICUS | Scoop.it

A doctor’s ability to explain, listen and empathize has a profound impact on a patient’s care.

Yet, as one survey found, two out of every three patients are discharged from the hospital without even knowing their diagnosis. Another study discovered that in over 60 percent of cases, patients misunderstood directions after a visit to their doctor’s office. And on average, physicians wait just 18 seconds before interrupting patients’ narratives of their symptoms. Evidently, we have a long way to go.

Three years ago, my colleagues and I started a program in Harrisburg designed to improve doctors’ communication with their patients. This large urban hospital system serves a city with a population of about 50,000, together with the surrounding metropolitan area of more than 550,000 people.

An unending task to introduce empathy into the current health system. We must ask ourself how to change the factors in the system that block empathy from happening naturally... Many things indeed.

"This materialistic society. I don't know, it happened after World War II. I suppose when people found they could, and began to realize money was being equated with power. It's just "I'm the biggest, I'm the best." It's a very primate feeling, really. It's like the gorilla beating his chest. But it's out of hand, totally."

Elevation Mapping: Pro-social Compassion Maps

Elevation Mapping: Pro-social Compassion Maps | EMPATICUS | Scoop.it

A few years back, I was having a conversation with a brilliant Stanford student about crime maps. He suggested that a really cool use of mapping technology would be to map compassion. I thought to myself, that is a crazy idea, how would we do that? I shrugged it off and tried not to think about this issue, but it became something of a puzzle that I want to solve. How could this be done? Who would map compassion?

Pål Dobrin's insight:

Hear no evil... but see the compassion!

When Stress Rises, Empathy Suffers

When Stress Rises, Empathy Suffers | EMPATICUS | Scoop.it
Humans—and mice—are much more likely to feel empathy toward friends than strangers. New research finds that stress hormones are to blame, writes Robert M. Sapolsky.

People are innately wired to avoid risk. During times of times of change and uncertainty, our risk aversion is amplified.
