There has been a lot of buzz recently about Empathy. Reports indicate that empathy might actually be decreasing, yet it is critical for effective leadership and global citizenship (though it also has its risks).
To help make sense of the importance of empathy, I had a conversation with Chris Jarvis and Angela Parker about a free online course they are offering in partnership with SAP called Empathy in Motion. The course – designed for corporate leaders looking to develop empathy in their employees, improving their volunteer programs, and/or employee engagement initiatives – shares how to build empathy through grassroots or institutional volunteering.
(Admittedly, after learning more about this course, I also think its takeaways are also interesting for students, volunteer managers in nonprofits, and also university leaders using service learning).
Hume uses an Empathic Voice Interface (EVI), an innovative AI chatbot endowed with emotional intelligence, capable of analysing vocal tones to understand when users finish speaking, and optimising responses to achieve user satisfaction.
Rather than responses that seem unnatural and mechanical — which are criticisms that have been levelled at ChatGPT’s vocal interface — with Hume users are treated to a truly immersive conversation, which takes into account both content and form when you address it. Each time you speak to EVI, the interface analyses your voice in terms of determination, interest, concentration, boredom, calm and satisfaction, and responds with the appropriate tone. The result is the impression of actually talking to someone. Curious users can try it out now: demo.hume.ai.
AI has long since surpassed humans in cognitive matters that were once considered the supreme disciplines of human intelligence like chess or Go. Some even believe it is superior when it comes to human emotional skills such as empathy.
This does not just seem to be some companies’ talking big for marketing reasons; empirical studies suggest that people perceive ChatGPT in certain health situations as more empathic than human medical staff. Does this mean that AI is really empathetic?
A definition of empathy As a psychologically informed philosopher, I define genuine empathy according to three criteria:
An empirical longitudinal study by LMU researchers tracked the emergence of empathic concern in children.
Children already exhibit empathic concern at 18 months. In an LMU study, the facial expressions, gestures, or vocalizations of children at this age indicated they were emotionally affected by the distress of another person. From a psychological standpoint, this is an important developmental step. “To experience empathic concern, the child must be able to distinguish between the self and the other person,” says Markus Paulus, Chair of Developmental Psychology and Educational Psychology at LMU. This self-concept emerges during the second year of life, as evidenced for instance by children recognizing themselves in the mirror.
Empathy: Perhaps one of the most well-known traits of emotional intelligence, empathy enables a person to put themselves in someone else’s shoes giving them greater ability to relate to another’s feelings and emotions. As a result, they can see things from different viewpoints and perspectives, fostering better relationships with others.

“Face-to-face conversation is where intimacy and empathy develop,” she said. “At work, conversation fosters productivity, engagement, and clarity and collaboration.”
“In my research, the most common thing that I hear is ‘I’d rather text than talk.’ Why? It’s because they feel less vulnerable.”
Sherry Turkle Now, AI chatbots serve as therapists and companions, providing a second-rate sense of connection, or what Turkle calls artificial intimacy.
They offer a simulated, hollowed-out version of empathy, she said. They don’t understand — or care — about what the user is going through. They’re designed to keep them happily engaged, and providing simulated empathy is just a means to that end.
Based on her research, Turkle said many people surprisingly seem to find pretend empathy fairly satisfying even though they realize that it’s not authentic.
Recurring problems leave teams burnt out and lacking innovative solutions. Empathy, through listening and asking powerful questions, can reclaim your ability to drive positive change. Listen fully without interrupting, accept the speaker's situation, and ask open-ended questions like
"Where have you seen this before?" or "What are you curious about?" This helps the speaker access their own understanding instead of being given solutions.
When you listen to help them share ideas, the next powerful question comes naturally based on their responses. Empathy via deep listening and thoughtful questioning builds deeper understanding, cultivates trust, and unlocks creative solutions.
