Why empathy is import at home and work and how to be better at it.

 

Neuroscientists have recently discovered that humans are wired to experience empathy through multiple systems of mirror neurons in our brains. These mirror neurons reflect back actions that we observe in others causing us to mimic that action in our own brains.  When we observe someone in pain or when we are with someone happy, we experience that to a certain extent. These mirror neurons are the primary physiological basis of empathy. They create a neural Wi-Fi that connects us to the feelings of people around us. 

 

Many people seem to be naturally empathetic. Others are not.  The good news is that research shows that empathy can be learned. There are however a few potential roadblocks to empathy that must be overcome.

Empathy is a key skill to dealing and interacting with people in a manner that produces positive outcome and builds healthy relationships.  The article does a good job explaining what emphathy is, as well as giving some tips to improve in this area.  It also includes facts to support the assertion that empathy matters at work, "Empathy is also important in the workplace. A study conducted by the Center for Creatively Leadership investigated 6,731 leaders from 38 countries. Their results reveal that empathy is positively related to job performance. The study concluded that managers who show more empathy toward direct reports are viewed as better performers in their job by their bosses."

Frank Meeink spoke for more than two hours last week Thursday at Ripon College to a rapt audience.

   But his talk came down to one word.

   Empathy.

   “Look, here’s the key to the *** kingdom, to everything,” he said, interspersing “colorful” language throughout his talk. “Empathy. People showing *** empathy.”

   It’s a lesson Meeink learned the hard way, through many years of mistakes, as he admitted to the students in Great Hall.

   But his experience as a former neo-Nazi have helped him better understand the mindset of others — and use that understanding to make a difference.

We feel empathy when we understand things from another person's perspective. A rare thing these days. Yet, empathy is critical to building a healthy society. It helps us understand each other. It removes obstacles to forward motion and allows us to help each other. When you really see others, it raises awareness, provides perspective, decreases hostility and promotes kindness.

Empathy makes it easier to solve problems. It provides us with patience and clarity and allows us to respect the thoughts and feelings of others. Empathy can calm anxiety and fear and help us control our emotions. It can help us to be more tolerant.

Here are 5 ways we can increase empathy:

Becoming an active listener

Empathy requires that we cultivate the trait of active listening. Most people are thinking how they are going to respond while the other person is still speaking. Active listening means being totally focused on what the other person is saying. To practice this, pretend that your job is to only focus on what the person has to say and accurately feed back to them what they have just said.

 

A bonus, if you do your job really well, is to be able to receive additional information and have the person to go deeper than they normally would have without your feedback. As your active listening skills increase, you will find people drawn to you and opening up to you more.'

The Empathy tent, a fixture at recent contentious demonstrations, is maintained by volunteers who offer to listen to everyone.

At this event we also held an empathy circle with Amber Cummings, the organizer of the Berkeley right wing rally against Marxism that drew thousands of counter protesters.

The empathy circle ended with hugs between the participants.

Empathic listening builds mutual understanding and trust.

Even when the conflict is not resolved, empathic listening can have a profound impact on the parties, improving relationships and generating mutual respect.

 

How: The former ombudsman at the University of Colorado, Tom Sebok, used to give a lecture in my conflict skills class every semester on active listening.  He said it involved three actions:

  • 1) attending to the speaker,
  • 2) paraphrasing what the speaker said and
  • 3) summarizing the key points.

New study: White people lack empathy across the socioeconomic spectrum

So while Trump’s rise is often explained as the blowback for a society more focused on Black Lives Matter or trans bathroom bans instead of jobs for coal miners and a growing opioid epidemic, the curious case of a growing racial empathy gap in this country has been unfairly shouldered by Trump’s white voters. An eye-opening new survey, however, reveals that white Americans across the socioeconomic spectrum, including Democrats, are considerably less concerned about both economic and racial inequality -- it just all depends on where on the socioeconomic spectrum they stand.


While working-class white folks made up Trump’s signature demographic, it was a surge of whites with college degrees that helped him flip notably blue states like Pennsylvania. These college-educated white people, a new survey from the nonpartisan PRRI found, lack empathy on issues of poverty that place them in stark contrast with the blue-collar voters who have been identified as Trump’s base.

Ten Ways to Identify the Difference
I’m teaching the 3rd cohort of the Dynamic Emotional Integration® series this year, and one of the students had an excellent question about whether we can, in fact, be accurate about other people’s emotions. Are we able to accurately read the emotions of others, or are we simply projecting based on our own understanding?

Some people make empathic accuracy difficult, because they want to argue about any emotion we suggest:

“I’m not angry — you’re angry!”

“I’m not afraid; fear is for cowards.”

“I’m not sad about it at all. I’m happy it’s over!”

It can be very confusing to try to develop your Empathic Accuracy around people who don’t want to talk about emotions. You can feel as if you’re projecting instead of truly empathizing. Luckily, there are ways to tell the difference, and ways to develop your accuracy.

Increasing empathy

Our children are wired for a sense of community. We can help them develop this by asking them to reflect on their feelings, to imagine what someone we come across is feeling or by making a gift for a relative or friend.

Try being silent for five minutes and focus on your breath. Gently move away any thoughts that come into your mind. Be quiet, inside and out. 

Be intentful in listening to someone. What are they saying and what are they feeling? Open your ears and close your lips.

Tune in to your own feelings. What is your body doing? Listen to your heart. Feel your stomach. Are you nervous? Stressed? Distracted?

In a recent article in Forbes, Teri Citterman, CEO of Talonn, writes, “Why empathy? Because it has the ability to make a material difference in how leaders lead and people respond. When people feel like their boss knows them, they

  • feel cared for and heard;
  • it translates to inspired and motivated employees.
  • Their trust increases.
  • Creativity increases.
  • Most importantly, people who feel cared about, feel safe. They feel like they matter and that their work has purpose.”

This article it is very interesting because it shows that teaching the students the empathy students the anxiety and the bullying can reduce due to that their defensive energy goes down, and positive energy replaces it. Thus it makes that students become more creative in solving problems.

Why is Empathy Important?

People with good empathy skills:

  • Express more generosity and concern with people’s welfare.
    Have greater wellbeing.
  • Tend to have happier relationships.
  •  Live longer, happier, healthier lives. A longitudinal Harvard study found that how happy we are in our relationships has a powerful influence on our health. Psychiatrist George
  • Vaillant, a director of the study, said, “When the study began, nobody cared about empathy or attachment. But the key to healthy aging is relationships, relationships, relationships.”


Empathy is one of the most important abilities that help people understand each other. It is critical to building bridges between individuals and to establishing healthy relationships.

Empathy is widely and increasingly heralded as an essential ingredient of morality. It is said to be necessary for moral development, moral motivation, and even for comprehending the moral domain.

 

But is empathy really important for morality? Prof Jesse Prinz and Prof Molly Crockett will address these claims and engage in a discussion and Q&A session. Prof Prinz argues that empathy is in fact not necessary for morality, and it may even be harmful. Because empathy can bias us towards our near and dear, and blind us to demands of justice, we should look beyond empathy in developing recommendations about how to instill moral competence and encourage moral commitment. For Prof Crockett, answering the question of whether empathy is necessary to morality has been difficult due to the limitations of methods for measuring morality in the lab.

 

Most research on human morality has relied on hypothetical judgments but there is evidence that hypothetical judgments are poor predictors of real moral decisions. In her talk she will describe newly developed methods for quantifying morality in the lab and present the results of a series of behavioral experiments investigating how people disvalue the pain of strangers relative to their own pain. These studies provide empirical data bearing on the question of whether empathy is important and necessary for morality.

For more than four decades, DDI has been developing millions of leaders in a set of eight interaction skills. These fall within two broad categories: providing structure to conversations (practical skills) and engaging others (personal skills). While all the skills are critical, we wanted to determine which have the highest impact on overall performance for early stage leaders and whether this conclusion would vary based on the purpose of the conversation.

Ever since I studied renowned humanist psychologist Carl Rogers’ groundbreaking work on empathy during my Master’s degree program in Marriage and Family Therapy, I was deeply struck by the power of empathy to improve lives, build meaningful connections, and develop leaders.

 

In my executive coaching work too, I see that empathy is something that we humans today vaguely understand is important, but very few of us have been trained or taught how to cultivate empathy in our lives and work as a daily practice.

What Is Empathy - It Is More Than Just Sympathy 

Empathy is, at its simplest, awareness of the feelings and emotions of other people. It is a key element of Emotional Intelligence, the link between self and others, because it is how we as individuals understand what others are experiencing as if we were feeling it ourselves.

Empathy goes far beyond sympathy, which might be considered ‘feeling for’ someone. Empathy, instead, is ‘feeling with’ that person, through the use of imagination.

By considering what a person feels you confirm the value of that person. Children become caring and loving individuals when their parents empathize with them. Research indicates that child neglect is associated with a lack of their parents’ emotional empathy.

 

A child learns empathy when she sees her mother hug a friend in distress. He learns empathy when he sees his dad help a neighbor. He learns empathy when his parents understand what he feels. A lack of empathy can result in antisocial behaviors, and many persons who are addicted seem to have impaired empathy.
