How can we maintain the ability to care about others? 

I vividly remember the first day my medical school classmates and I met our cadavers in the anatomy lab. Large body bags lay on metal tables that had been bolted to the floor. I remember the sheer size of the bags best. No doubt existed in my mind that dead human bodies indeed lay within them.

 

And yet part of me couldn't quite grasp that I was actually going to soon be unzipping them and cutting into flesh through which blood had once flowed as freely as it now did in mine. I vividly remember also a classmate of mine—one who'd struck me as being particularly sensitive to others—leaning against the wall at one point, looking pale and shaky. I remember worrying that she was going to faint.

2. PERSPECTIVE-TAKING ISN’T TOUCHY-FEELY. 


Perspective-taking sounds a lot like empathy, but the two qualities are siblings, not identical twins. Empathy — the ability to understand another’s emotional state — is an essential human quality. But research has shown that, in commercial settings such as negotiations, understanding the other side’s thoughts and interests, not simply their emotions and feelings, can be more effective in forging a deal.


So if you’re in a high-stakes leadership situation, definitely be emotionally intelligent. But use your head as much as your heart.


3. DON’T FORGET MIMICRY. Mimicking others’ posture, gesture, and expressions sounds like the sleazy tactics of a used car salesman....

Videogames and empathy—you could hardly be blamed for thinking that these two things have very little in common. Just last week Polygon published an opinion essay titled “No skin thick enough: The daily harassment of women in the game industry.


In the essay the author, Brianna Wu, details the abuse directed at women involved with videogames. It’s a demoralizing read, one that had me reflecting on the notion that we are entering a ‘ludic century’ (Zimmerman), in which our culture will be defined by systems, games, and play. If that’s true, then we need to seriously consider what Heather Chaplin calls the ‘dark side of the ludic century’—an age in which we become better at analyzing systems and detecting patterns, and less capable of sympathy and empathy.


From this perspective, the trouble with games and empathy may have only just begun as the ludic century could be a period of prolonged detachment and disengagement from one another.

Empathy is an ability to relate to the emotions of others. Humans have a tendency to mimic the emotions of those around them. In other words, as your feelings go, my feelings go; if you feel sad, I feel sad; if you feel happy, I feel happy if you feel angry, I feel angry; if you feel love, I feel love; if you feel compassion, I feel compassion.


Empathy is an ability to relate to the emotions of others. Humans have a tendency to mimic the emotions of those around them. So how do we know when we are being empathic? One way is to check it out. Asking for acknowledgement is one way to know what someone is feeling...


 How can we define empathy? Heinz Kohut, one of the fathers of modern psychology describes it best when he defines empathy as "vicarious introspection." Kohut describes empathy as an intellectual process and is distinguished from compassion and sympathy by our ability to determine what the other is about without the aid of emotion. He uses the example of how Hitler understood empathy when he placed sirens on his dive bombers because he knew what it would do to the people on the ground. As his troops came into town the people were so scared they immediately surrendered because he had already won the psychological battle.


It was Kohut who postulated that all psychological difficulties begin with empathic failures.

Our understanding of empathy is pretty limited, but many figures are calling for change. Corporate culture is beginning to recognise the need to put yourself in someone else's shoes.


Business buzzwords are changing. Pervasive gibberish like “mission-critical optimisation” and “blue-skies thinking” is in decline; instead we’re witnessing the rise – sorry, “phase-in” – of terms like social innovation and sustainability. Corporations now want to show you not just that they care, but that they really care.


Empathy is the latest addition to the
management dictionary.


There’s a huge profit motive galvanising this change. Belinda Parmar, author of The Empathy Era, thinks we’re on the cusp of a corporate revolution. “Empathy is the key to profit,” she says. “It is a natural social resource that has, for years, been left untapped by an outdated corporate model, hampered and trussed up by its systemising protocol. The corporate world is in need of rehabilitation. It needs to redress its empathy deficit.

To prevent burnout, Dr Williams said it’s healthy for individuals to be emotionally withdrawn from time to time.


"If an individual came about managing their own compassion fatigue by withdrawing from the media, that’s probably not such a bad thing… a break from it could provide perspective."

How to avoid compassion fatigue

  • Support network. Have a strong and supportive network around you that you can debrief with, says social work lecturer Amanda Lambros from Curtin University.
  • Take a break. Journalism researcher Julie Posetti recommends tuning out from news media from time to time. "Tuning out for periods is becoming increasingly necessary - both to avoid vicarious trauma, and to prevent compassion fatigue," she said.
  • But don’t withdraw entirely....

In this guest post, the filmmakers of the forthcoming feature documentary, "My Country, No More" explain the importance of empathy in the storytelling process.


If empathy is feeling with someone, sympathy is feeling for them. Sympathetic storytelling lets sentimentality get in the way of a good story. In the film "Into the Abyss," Werner Herzog declares to a death row inmate, "I don't have to like you, but you are a human being."

Just because we dislike someone does not mean they don't have a story worth sharing. How many TV shows out right now are about putting yourself in the headspace of a mad man?...

1. Storytelling is about shared experience.
2. Empathy is not sympathy.
3. Empathy is difficult.
4. Empathy leaves us with a feeling instead of telling us what to feel.

Empathy fuels our curiosity and reveals a
more nuanced way of looking at the world.
To approach situations empathetically is

Empathy is a crucial human emotion. It’s a prerequisite to any meaningful and lasting human collaboration. But can empathy, in certain situations, actually prolong and intensify human suffering? Sadly I’m afraid the answer is yes...

As long as such empathy compromises our ability to keep our eyes on the true source of the Palestinian suffering, steering our attention towards Israeli military strikes and the immediate and tragic damage they cause – this empathy will only lead to the prolonging of the tragic reality in which the Palestinians live.

If we want to build empathy, America needs to get talking! So how can you turn language learning into empathy-building?


What do highly empathetic people do? "They talkThey listenThey understand.
They start to speak each
other’s language.


In the effort to promote empathy, it’s key that foreign languages are part of the conversation. Language learning is an empathy-building exercise. It builds tolerance and demonstrates respect. And it forces us to realize that our own culture is not universal. Yet, America is falling behind. It’s a problem that the Modern Language Association calls “the nation’s language deficit.”

Undergraduates are learning languages at half the rate they were in 1965. In particular, we’re not learning some of the languages most relevant to a changing world. Javanese is more widely spoken than French, German, and Italian, but was studied by only one college student in America in 2009. Similarly, few students are learning other languages among the top 15 most spoken: Bengali, Lahnda, Hindi and Telugu, to name a few. Today, we’re missing the opportunity to communicate with the vast majority of the globe.

Ed Miliband, leader of Britain’s opposition Labour Party, is certainly attracting a lot of attention (for example, here and here) over his recently-announced attempt to present himself as a different sort of political leader.


As a man who is not renowned for his admiration of business, he might not appreciate this, but in his attempt to present himself as having empathy with voters he is following a trend growing popular with his counterparts in the corporate world.

Indeed, it could be that Miliband himself does not truly understand the notion of empathy. As Christine M. Riordan, professor of management at the University of Kentucky, wrote in a Harvard Business Review blog earlier this year, listening is a key aspect of empathy.

Everybody is empathetic, some are excessively so. Here a few signs which are very attributable to an EE. If someone is awkward in normal situations or normal in what’s usually a very awkward moment.


A person who never jokes on another person who’s in their presence, this is completely pointless to an EE just as stabbing yourself with a fork is. An EE will not laugh out loud at someone being picked on. S -

The political system rests on an economy that concentrates wealth and power. It’s a gloomy picture, for sure, but what does it have to do with the subject of empathy?


The answer is that democracy is lost unless we re-structure our economies, and re-structuring our economies requires a new operating system based on different values. That’s what empathy provides, not in its “thin” form as a vague appreciation of peoples’ feelings, but in its “thick” form that commits everyone to foster the wellbeing of others, and do no harm...


If empathy is the ability to understand the perspectives of others and use that understanding to guide one’s actions, then it’s safe to conclude that our current economies inculcate the opposite.


What would change if the economy
was re-structured with empathy
at the center?

What neuroscience adds and takes away


The powerful don’t empathize with those less powerful, according to new research reported in The New York Times. The reason offered is that, “when people experience power, their brains fundamentally change how sensitive they are to the actions of others.” 


This is a nice example of how cognitive neuro-scientists, focusing entirely on “objective” evidence, in this case the activity of “mirror neurons,” miss out on the common sense meaning of human behavior. An earlier explanation of this well-known effect, offered by Susan Fiske, a psychologist at Princeton, is


 that “powerful people don’t attend well to others around them because they don’t need them in order to access important resources.” They “already have plentiful access to those.”

Are new Republican policies really a return to "compassionate conservatism"? No -- and that's a good thing.


Compassionate conservatism is back. That's how Peter Beinart, a contributing editor at the Atlantic, reads a number of recent developments in Republican politics, the most recent being Representative Paul Ryan's announcement of new anti-poverty proposals.


Beinart is skeptical that this revival of an old campaign theme will work. I'm skeptical that the revival is even taking place.


Beinart argues that compassionate conservatism -- the idea that conservative principles can be applied to alleviate persistent social problems such as poverty -- never did much to win elections for Republicans.
