8 Ways Emotionally Intelligent People Deal With Toxic People

8 Ways Emotionally Intelligent People Deal With Toxic People | Emotional Wisdom | Scoop.it

Life is stressful enough for most of us. Allowing a toxic individual to ravage your immediate environment can cause havoc in your mental well-being, which can lead to physical challenges.

A bad state of mind not only affects your physical well-being but makes it difficult for you to respond calmly under pressure. Ninety percent of top performers are skilled at managing their emotions, so your ability to perform effectively can be affected if you do not adopt strategies that will allow you to deal with toxic people.

Tom Wojick's insight:

People are not toxic, however their emotions may have a toxic affect on others as as to their own well-being.

Don Wilson's curator insight, July 13, 12:52 PM

Emotional Intelligence is a great skill to possess. It will truly benefit your life and everyone around you. If you are a student, parent, husband, wife, employee, employer; entrepreneur, teacher, preacher. If you are a man woman, or child, EI, can help you release damaging toxins, left by toxic people (and you too) that add undue stress, tension, and pressure; and free yourself, by improving your mental state, which in turn, increases your health and performance.

Other benefits include, but are not limited to; lower blood pressure and hyper-tension, blood sugar levels (diabetes), headaches, back and stomach pain. Paranoia, anxiety, and other related symptoms.

I am a student and practitioner of EI; and I have grown and benefited from it greatly, and so can you.

Great Ways to Deal with Toxic People!

Alicia Newton's curator insight, July 14, 9:07 AM

Great article on avoiding the quicksand of toxic people. I practice many of these techniques. Boundaries; many you will have to love from a distance and it's ok. Being clear that just because people have the right to say what they want doesn't make it true about you; keep it moving. There will be positive & negative people. You get to choose who you will lend your energy to.

I don't find these seven habits surprising. I do see a relationship to these habits to what we are finding about pro-social behavior and how it has a positive affect on our happiness. When we extend ourselves to give or help another person both people benefit - the giver is happier and the receiver feels appreciated.

Emotional Intelligence: The Social Skills You Weren't Taught in School

Emotional Intelligence: The Social Skills You Weren't Taught in School | Emotional Wisdom | Scoop.it
You’re taught about history, science, and math when you’re growing up. Most of us, however, aren’t taught how to identify or deal with our own emotions, or the emotions of others. These skills can be valuable, but you’ll never get them in a classroom.
Tom Wojick's insight:

Increasingly the decisiveness and polarization we are seeing in culture along with the increase in violence can be linked to our emphasis on the "hard" sciences and finance and neglecting what makes us humans - our emotional being.

Frontiers | Antecedents of organizational engagement: exploring vision, mood and perceived organizational support with emotional intelligence as a moderator | Personality and Social Psychology

As organizational leaders worry about the appalling low percentage of people who feel engaged in their work, academics are trying to understand what causes an increase in engagement. We collected survey data from 231 team members from two organizations. We examined the impact of team members’ emotional intelligence (EI) and their perception of shared personal vision, shared positive mood, and perceived organizational support (POS) on the members’ degree of organizational engagement. We found shared vision, shared mood, and POS have a direct, positive association with engagement. In addition, shared vision and POS interact with EI to positively influence engagement. Besides highlighting the importance of shared personal vision, positive mood, and POS, our study contributes to the emergent understanding of EI by revealing EI’s amplifying effect on shared vision and POS in relation to engagement. We conclude by discussing the research and practical implications of this study.

Corporate Empathy Is Not an Oxymoron - HBR

Corporate Empathy Is Not an Oxymoron - HBR | Emotional Wisdom | Scoop.it

Enlightened companies are increasingly aware that delivering empathy for their customers, employees, and the public is a powerful tool for improving profits, but attempts to implement empathy programs are frequently hamstrung by the common misconception of it as “wishy-washy,” “touchy-feely,” and overtly feminine.

So empathy is de-prioritized, and relegated to the status of just yet another HR initiative that looks good in the company newsletter. It is seen as a soft and frilly add-on rather than a core tool.

An additional problem facing CEOs is that many see empathy as an intangible quality, and as such hard to quantify. If you can’t measure empathy then it is very difficult to assess how much empathy your company is delivering, and where the greatest empathy deficits lie.

by Belinda Parmar

Via Edwin Rutsch
Tom Wojick's insight:

In the USA we consider corporations the same as individuals, therefore it makes sense that they would possess the capacity for empathy. The question is how do we as individuals help corporations discover their empathy and the positive benefits that they can gain by being empathic.
