10 Ways to Practice Self-Compassion to Minimize Your Shame and Suffering

10 Ways to Practice Self-Compassion to Minimize Your Shame and Suffering  | Emotional Intelligence Development | Scoop.it
“This is a moment of suffering. Suffering is part of life. May I be kind to myself in this moment. May I give myself the compassion I need.” ~Kristin Neff

I consider myself to be a very compassionate person, but I’ve struggled a great deal with self-compassion. Though I’ve now been sober for over six years, back when I was drinking I made a lot of mistakes, and it’s taken me a long time to have empathy and understanding for myself.

While drinking, I did and said a lot of things that made me feel ashamed and unhappy. When I drank, one of my go-to moves was giving into a sudden, intense desire to leave (or attempt to leave) a bar or party.

The Development of Empathy... An Essential Life Skill!

The Development of Empathy... An Essential Life Skill! | Emotional Intelligence Development | Scoop.it

As a result a more empathetic brain will have more difficulty behaving in a violent way. While attending the sleep over party, my brain pathways likely fired in a way that found it too difficult to be mean to the new girl.

Various versions of interesting studies reveal that babies as young as 5 months old can demonstrate empathy skills. However, due to a variety of situations and circumstances some children do not experience the ideal serve and return relationships early in life. A child that does not experience the give and take of a relationship is simply not going to develop the brain connections for seeing things from another person’s point of view.

Design Thinking: Empathy Maps

Design Thinking: Empathy Maps  | Emotional Intelligence Development | Scoop.it
Empathy Maps help to rapidly put your team in the user’s shoes and align on pains and gains — whether at the beginning of a project or mid-stream when you need to re-focus on your user.

Empathy Map is a tool that helps designers empathize with the people for which they are designing a solution.

With empathetic mapping the designer/developer put themselves in the position of the user. Empathy Maps can also be used to test a prototype design or in activities such as role playing to help better understand the needs of the user.

Is empathy the hidden motor of human history? | New Humanist | Emotional Intelligence Development | Scoop.it
Often depicted as a feel-good emotion and “soft” skill, empathy can be a powerful secular force for social and political transformation
Barbara Kerr's insight:

"Simply put, empathy and reason typically operate in conjunction to create the foundations of human rights and social justice. They are not polar opposites but are in fact the best of friends, a democratic double act. Like knife and fork, ball and socket, Fred and Ginger, they work best when they work together."
