Instagram vs. Pinterest: Which Is More Important for Brands?

Instagram vs. Pinterest: Which Is More Important for Brands? | Emerging Media Topics | Scoop.it

In the past year and a half we’ve seen a real shift in social media. A move is happening away from the strict confines of the 140 character update towards something more visual.

More than ever, we are sharing images and video with one another — in increasingly simpler ways. In a relatively short amount of time Pinterest and Instagram have both grown into their own juggernaut communities.

Both of these services offer great, new, visual ways to connect with your fans and potential customers, but do you really need to focus on both? In the battle of Instagram vs. Pinterest, which one is a better fit for your brand?

10 Social Media Secrets from the Social Scientist

10 Social Media Secrets from the Social Scientist | Emerging Media Topics | Scoop.it
Value is the currency on the Web, and the more value you create, the more people will flock to you. It has been said give till it hurts and you will receive it back in spades.

There are some secrets regarding social media that I’d like to share.

I’m a bit of a hard-core social media user and I’ve been doing web and content development for many years now. Because I have been online for a very long time (pre-graphical Web), I am pretty attuned to what constitutes authentic and cooperative behavior online. There are things that set apart the altruistic contributor (check out this cool thing!), for instance, from the self-serving ones (buy my stuff!).

If you do nothing else this year, consider shifting your social media strategy to encompass increasingly pro-social guidelines. The more you give, the more the community will give back, but it needs to be done with a sensitive hand.

Music, Film, TV: How social media changed the entertainment experience - Brian Solis

Music, Film, TV: How social media changed the entertainment experience - Brian Solis | Emerging Media Topics | Scoop.it

Today everybody should know that social media are much more than a mode effect. This excellent post will convince you, if you aren't yet. [note mg]

Social media is more than a digital water cooler for TV and movies. The global conversation that takes place around events and the experiences people share based on what they watch teaches us about consumer preferences. More importantly, their activity influences behavior. Behavior counts for everything. Studying it is just the beginning of course. In order to understand and eventually steer behavior, we must translate activity into insights and in turn, translate insights into actionable strategies and programs.

The Hollywood Reporter recently published an exclusive poll about social media led by market research firm Penn Schoen Berland. As the report opens, THR notes, “There’s a sea change afoot in how Americans discover and consume entertainment.”

According to the study, 88% of respondents view social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook as a new form of entertainment.

How to Cultivate a Company-Wide Social Media Culture

How to Cultivate a Company-Wide Social Media Culture | Emerging Media Topics | Scoop.it
Learn how to create a company culture that encourages the use of social media among its employees.

The workplace as we once knew it -- post-it notes, memos, fax machines -- that's all gone. Today, it's all digital, baby.

Gone are the days when it was innovative to have a website. And creating a Facebook page for your business is no longer an advanced social media strategy. In fact, now that social media has picked up steam in its conquest of the digital realm, the companies coming out on top are not just those that send out some pre-scheduled tweets; the successful companies actually adapt their entire corporate culture to our social media-oriented world.

Some companies have found the transition to a social media culture easy, especially those which have already integrated social media into their marketing strategy.

How Google & Technology is Changing Your Brain’s Rote Memory (The Google Effect Study)

How Google & Technology is Changing Your Brain’s Rote Memory (The Google Effect Study) | Emerging Media Topics | Scoop.it

A recent study has confirmed that the search engine Google is changing your brain and altering the way it works, seriously. But then again, this really shouldn’t come as a surprise since any new technology is going to change the way that our neurons fire and brain works. Anyways, a group of people got money for a study called “The Google Effect” led by Betsy Sparrow at Columbia University. Findings from the study led by Betsy were published in the popular journal, “Science.”

How is Google changing your brain? What did The Google Effect study find?

Contrary to popular myth that using the internet is making people dumber, that wasn’t what the researchers found. What they found was the fact that using the Google search engine causes the brain to reorganize its memories for information. Instead of relying on what is called “Rote memory,” people are using new technology such as their computers and Google to get the job done. In other words, instead of people using their brains directly to pull up information are basically saying, “I can just quick go Google it instead of try to test my memory.”

7 Ways to Be a Successful Social Marketer

7 Ways to Be a Successful Social Marketer | Emerging Media Topics | Scoop.it

Social marketing is an advertising art that is widely utilized but less widely successful, forcing marketers who are looking for real, measurable results to hone their tactics. Review our list of seven ways to be a successful social marketer to help give you a leg up on the competition!

1. Build strong, targeted social media accounts.

Your social media accounts are only as useful as the friends and followers connected to them, making the first step of building those accounts absolutely crucial. Instead of simply working to obtain as many connections as possible, work instead to connect with like-minded people who are more likely to have an interest in what you have to offer.

Moving at the Speed of Creativity - Drawing is an Act of Attention

Moving at the Speed of Creativity - Drawing is an Act of Attention | Emerging Media Topics | Scoop.it

This quote is from Jonah Lenrer's book, "Imagine: How Creativity Works," which I highly recommend -- Howard:

"When you draw an object, the mind becomes deeply, intensely attentive,” Glaser says. “And it’s that act of attention that allows you to really grasp something, to become fully conscious of it. That’s what I learned from my mother’s face, that drawing is really a kind of thinking.”"

Thx for sharing this Howard.

I really learn a great deal each time I read Jonah Lehrer's work. This one I have not bought yet - although I have passed by it a few times! :-) (Purchased John Brockman's books each time! <g>)

This is not dissimilar from Mihalyi Csikszentmihalyi's work on 'flow'. I will now need to get Imagine to just compare the two sets of thoughts on this.

(Note: did you know that Mihalyi was a rock climber at one point? Me too - and in those days I used to think about 'flow' a lot - for my classrooms and in reflecting on the climbing. This 'deep, intense, attentiveness' is a characteristic that we can energize in many circumstances.

As you would agree, I am sure, we need to continue to work to understand as much as we can, because if we are serious about helping our kids to 'take charge of their own learning', it goes well beyond the traditional definitions of 'metacognition' - with all due respect to the late Dr. Robert Glaser. ;-)
