Originally a success story but now encountering some problems

Tiffany Li's curator insight, April 24, 2014 3:38 PM

KFC was predicting that the decrease in sales of KFC would turn around in the summer 2013. Sadly, they were wrong. KFC's profit has been down 68%. A decrease sales leads to a decrease in aggregate demand because people are wanting to buy less which would also lead to a decrease in GDP and price level.

Wal-Mart to open up to 110 new China stores by 2016 | Emerging Markets BUSS4 | Scoop.it

Terence R. Egan's curator insight, December 27, 2013 1:24 AM

Strange article.

Wal-Mart is opening up to 110 new stores in China within 3 years ... and beginning with the closure of 30 stores!

It's difficult to fathom the strategy from this puff piece but it seems that Wal-Mart's new stores will be substantially smaller and differently formatted than those to which we've become accustomed. Wal-Mart's understandable focus in China will be online sales.

The Chinese have embraced online buying with gusto. We are already seeing a major change to the retail landscape in Beijing. Zhongguancun -- always a hive of activity for electronics sales -- is notable for the mass abandonment of market stall spaces at many venues. Huge department store developments are closing entire sections. Once-bustling shopping destinations are becoming a wildlife reserve for bored staff playing on mobile phones (although they did that in busier times as well ... who needs 'em? ).

Explaination of Tesco's decision to sell its Chinese business into a new joint venture with CRE. Left with a 20% stake and had to invest £300m+ into the JV; but at least it limits Tesco's losses in China.

Mr Jones's curator insight, January 29, 2014 6:43 AM

Why has it taken Tesco 10 year to refine its strategy? What advantages do they hope for from the new approach? Who paid who in the creation of this new joint venture?

tutor2u's insight:

A nice short summary here of Tesco's decision to sell its Chinese business into a new joint venture with CRE. Left with a 20% stake and had to invest £300m+ into the JV; but at least it limits Tesco's losses in China and enables it to focus attention back here in the UK.
