As the school year starts, many teachers are wanting to implement flipped learning into their classes.  Before you begin, I encourage you to answer each of the questions below.  The purpose of the questions is to help teachers BEGIN the process of flipping their class.  This is only the first step.  Flipped Class 101 can lead to Flipped Learning, which is a second stage of the Flipped Class. Many teachers are asking for some step by step guidelines as they begin.

Yet there is still the issue that students are citing images without checking to see if they have the correct permissions to do so. Students (and teachers) need to be aware of copyright rules. Using resources like Flickr you will find many pictures but students need to learn how check to see if the image is under Creative Commons and accurately site the source.

Langwitch does an excellent job explaining a situtation that she experienced with her students and provides screenshots to help you understand what to look for. Teaching students how to cite resources is teaching our students media literacy.

Consider having your students create an image that they could put under Create Commons and have attibuted to them of others were to use it.

  • WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR?

    The  key factors are: Learners’ age, back ground knowledge, the purpose of learning, the learners’ circumstances (employed, students, unemployed, etc…)

  • DO YOU HAVE THE COURSE CURRICULUM?

    In many cases the course curriculum does exist, for example: National Curriculum, University course modules , In-house corporate training.

  • WHAT EXTERNAL PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS NEED TO BE MET?

    All external examination bodies provide an exam guide or syllabus which you have to insure your course will address them.

  • WHAT IS THE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT?

    Would your learners attend any face to face classes? Do they access their course from home, work, or college? Do they work as a group or individuals?

Robin Good opinion:

Kirsten Wilson analyzes three different levels of content curation presently in use and describes accurately the differences between these. 

 

"In regards to levels of curation it is much like Blooms. There is knowledge level curation- it is done for remembering and understanding (the “Learner Level”).


Another level is applying and analyzing- it is curated for use or been used and is a proven tool for using whether it be your tool or a tool you have discovered from your global connections via Social Media, blogs or simple internet searches (the “Facilitator Level”). 


Finally, there are curations that go to the level of evaluation and creation… these are the curations that become invaluable tools to others. It takes the most work, but the result is most thorough and the resource it provides to others can be invaluable (the “Designer Level”)."

 

He concludes by reminding all would-be curators the importance of attribution and the amount of effort that the "designer level" of curation requires: "In this world of immediate access and available content make every effort to honor the source of your curation, inspiration and/or springboard for design. 


Those that do curate at a “Designer” level and in many cases are the first in their field of expertise to find a new “method” put hours into the development and design."

Session Summary:

Once again, hosting #ukedchat was an evening of mind-frying! In the nicest possible way, of course, but so many different ideas were floating about from what seemed to be a simple question! We started off talking about pupil feedback that is given via face to face, real life, real time methods – 2 stars and a wish, Tickled Pink, Green for Growth, “Even Better If….”, Elmos, OSC (one small change),  traffic light cards + pairing up red/green pupils! The use of post-it notes is still going strong – whether by teachers or students/pupils…. Opportunities to check each others’ work for  neatness, spelling, etc are seen as important… and links between 360 feedback in the business world were mentioned. Plan, develop, reflect/revisit, revise, rework/learning caterpillars/heart of the matter are other phrases used

The graphic (above) provides a nice visual to help understand the difference between project based learning and traditional units with a final project. Where are the differences? Traditional units have lectures, activities, quizzes, a review, an exam the project. With project bases learning you begin with an event plus a rubric and then move through a series of activites that help students reach benchmarks. Project based learning is authentic learning.

Here's a great curation story. Derek Vincent Smith also known musically as Pretty Lights has published a video album that is a curation masterpiece since its very inception. To create a uniquely personal sound and style Derek has brought to the recording studio tens of musicians to record and master 25 vinyls from which he would then sample, remix and curate the final tracks of his new album.


The videos of the tracks, (here is a short playlist I've created of some of the most representative ones) are equally impressive, as they have been produced by capturing imagery that would be otherwise be considered utterly useless and curated with graphic and visual effects of all kinds as to generate some truly visual masterpieces.

The results, in my humble view, are truly stunning.

It is important to build your own brand and to promote yourself positively. You want to be polite to other users and make sure you have nothing on your profile that could be damaging to your reputation. This includes swear words, inappropriate or rude comments, and pictures and videos of drinking or drugs.  This is really important for graduating students who, most likely, need to go through and delete pictures that have been tagged in one Facebook

Make sure you give credit to others if you share something of theirs. Also make sure you are writing your own posts and not just sharing others. However, make sure you are posting valuable and relevant information. Listen and think before you write and make sure you are using proper english. 

It is okay to have debates on social netowrks with other users, everybody has the right ti voice their opinion, but don't let things get too personal or nasty. 

It is also essential to understand that there are also hings to be very careful of when using social networks. For one, people are not always who they seem. You should also make sure you do not assume a false identity. It is important to keep some kind of professionalism, but don't change yourself or hide who you really are. 

You must also make sure you are abiding by the rules of the network and report others who dont. 

Last but certainly not least, be very careful about who you share things with. There are certain places to share certain things. For example, you may post something bout your personal life in your Facebook status, but it is not appropriate to do so on your LinkedIn profile. Do not share pictures and videos with strangers, you never know how they will use these.
