"Smartphones, iPads, TVs, computers, videogames. Technology is omnipresent, especially for young students. They just can’t get enough; one 2013 study found that college students check their digital devices for non-class purposes 11 times per day on average, and 80 percent of them admitted that the technology was distracting them from class. This has some educators and scientists concerned: Are students distracted because their brains are hard-wired for it after a lifetime of screens? Is there a cultural or behavioral element to the fixation that has infiltrated the classroom?"

The premise seems to be that educators are incorporating technology as a defensive strategy to combat distraction. Interesting. I have to wonder if distraction is always "bad." I also wonder if one of the reasons students gravitate towards their devices is because they have them. . .rather than doodle in their notebooks and write notes to their friends or find other ways to manage their "distractions" which are often responses to battling boredom. Why write a whole note that could be collected by the teacher when you can text? But maybe we shouldn't assume that student distraction (read "not paying attention to what the teacher is saying") equals a lack of engagement. Maybe it's curiosity.

Although the "jury is still out" on whether students' apparent "addiction" to digital devices impede concentration and performance in a structured classroom environment, some teachers  are finding the iPad, smart phones, and tablets used by students can be help accelerate the teaching of science, technology, and math--subjects that fall under the STEM banner.  Whether these digital devices "hardwire" the brain is still a debatable subject.  Meanwhile, teachers are learning to use these devices as a supportive educational tool. Interesting article. Reflections…. Self worth and achievement seem to be linked together in most of Western Society. We personalise events in our life and then begin to live from our memories, gaining a false sense of identity instead of seeing it simply as a series of skills to learn.

Of these 10 proposed drivers, I an guessing that the most important will be #5 and #6. At least for the time being, universities are really strapped for funds. Consider for # 5 a 'MOOC-Based wrapped course' where a prof assigns a MOOC as homework, and then  meets with the class one day a week = and follows up with a couple of weeks of class time at the end for projects and examinations. This strikes me as a  good division of labor in many courses - letting the high production videos do what they do best and the prof do what demands a human mind and heart for problem solving and coaching and mentoring. It can reduce faculty time by more than 1/2 without loss of quality. Now for #6, consider a group of twenty faculty members teaching wrapped courses based on the very same MOOC. They will have many questions and concerns and they can (a) find each other and (b) address them collectively through their learning network. The only other 'driver' that floats my boat at this point is #3. Many students like MOOC-based courses. The lectures are excellent and fit conveniently into schedules, and the professor is available to serve his or her most important functions. But I wouldn't oversell this. Many students still prefer day to day hand holding and may actually need it from a socio-emotional perspective to stay engaged in the course. So I'm betting on #5 and #6 as most important.

"This week I’ve been getting excited about using Kahoot in the classroom. Kahoot delivers online quizzes and surveys to your students.


It works very similar to the more well-known Socrative. The teacher displays the question and the answers on the beamer or tv in the front of the classroom. The students see the corresponding icon and color on their screen. They have 30 seconds to answer on their devices and get points for every question they answer right. The quicker they answer the more points they receive. After each question the top 5 students are shown on the board with their scores. This is where it gets exciting. The students love this immediate feedback and want to get to the top position. I have never seen students so focused on answering the questions correctly."
