VoiceNote: Another Excellent Voice-to-Text App for Google Chrome

VoiceNote: Another Excellent Voice-to-Text App for Google Chrome | Embedding digital literacy in the classroom | Scoop.it

Once again Paul Hamilton brings us another great tool to use with Chrome, VoiceNote. He states that it "offers excellent voice-to-text...VoiceNote opens as a dictation window." Therefore it may "sit on top of a document being written" (or occupy your entire screen). A few of the features he mentions are:

* dictating directly into a text box facilitates creating paragraphs or longer selections of text

* on-screen buttons for adding punctuation

* suport for multiple languages

So Many Fun Ways To Use Blabberize In The Classroom

So Many Fun Ways To Use Blabberize In The Classroom | Embedding digital literacy in the classroom | Scoop.it

"Give any Image a Talking Mouth and Make it an Engaging Learning Opportunity! There are quite a few web 2.0 tools that provide easy and exciting ways to integrate technology in the classroom. One of them is Blabberize, a free online tool that allows you to quickly create talking images, providing some great opportunities to foster student engagement and collaboration."

Beth Dichter's curator insight, August 14, 5:20 AM

Have you used Blabberize in your classroom? It is a free tool that allows you to upload an image and then create a talking picture. This post provides may suggestions on how to use it across disciplines as well as a video playlist that will showcase many examples of student work.

Below are a few ideas.

* Research a historical figure and use Blabberize to have them talk about their lives.

* Find a favorite quote from a fictional character and have the character say the quote (and explain it if necessary).

* Think about science and how you could use a talking image to explain an experiment, a change of phase, etc.

* Research an animal and have the animal talk about their habitat, what they eat, etc.

There are many ideas in this post and I suspect you can come up with more. Students need to able to create their own image (or find one that copyright free) and upload the image. It would be best if they wrote out what the image would say and practice it prior to recording using a computer.

The post also discusses how students could collaborate on projects, and notes that if you cannot record with a computer you can record using a phone. Find more information as well as  a link to a video tutorial in the post.

Getting Ready for Primary Computing in September - July 2014 Blog Post

Getting Ready for Primary Computing in September - July 2014 Blog Post | Embedding digital literacy in the classroom | Scoop.it

I have spent this academic year as a test bed for the new Computing Curriculum. This has involved reviewing various resources including apps. I have decided, as I often do, in a less is more approach. A few iPad apps, Espresso Coding and Scratch can cover much of objectives of the programming aspect of the new Computing Curriculum.

In terms of apps, I am going to use Kodable https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/kodable-pro/id649572737?mt=8&uo=4&at=11lIT4 as a starting point in Reception. Prior to that I will ask Pre-school teachers to introduce the sequencing activity in Bugs and Buttons https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/bugs-and-buttons/id446031868?mt=8&uo=4&at=11lIT4 to introducing early programming skills. Year 1 will look at Daisy Dino https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/daisy-the-dinosaur/id490514278?mt=8&uo=4&at=11lIT4 as a stepping stone into Hopscotch and Scratch. Year 2 will look at drawing shapes etc in Hopscotch https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/hopscotch-programming-designed/id617098629?mt=8&uo=4&at=11lIT4 before Year 3/4 look at more complicated game creation in Hopscotch. This will lead nicely into Scratch and continued Hopscotch use in Years 5/6.
Hopscotch is the key app with so many possibilities and a real blank canvas for pupils to be creative on.

Espresso Coding www.espressocoding.co.uk is a series of online activities and video tutorials that has been free this past year. The sample activities are quite prescribed but they offer a nice progression.

Finally, Scratch http://scratch.mit.edu/
http://scratch.mit.edu/ has been used well this term by Year 6 who have created games such as multi-player racing. I intend to do even more with it next term as I have planned more time.

I would love to hear what everyone has planned for September in terms of Computing. Enjoy the end of term and the holidays.
