Sustaining Librarian Vitality: Embedded Librarianship Model for Health Sciences Libraries

http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/02763869.2013.806860

Lin's insight:
With biomedical information widely accessible from anywhere at any time, health sciences libraries have become less centralized, and they are challenged to stay relevant and vital to the mission and strategic goals of their home institution. One solution is to embed librarians at strategic points in health professions' education, research, and patient care. This article discusses a proposed five-level model of embedded librarianship within the context of health sciences libraries and describes different roles, knowledge, and skills desirable for health sciences librarians working as embedded librarians.

Transitioning to the Embedded Librarian Model and Improving the Senior Capstone Business Strategy Course

Transitioning to the Embedded Librarian Model and Improving the Senior Capstone Business Strategy Course | Embedded librarianship | Scoop.it
Lin's insight:

"In collaboration with a strategy professor, a research librarian at a four-year SACS and AACSB-accredited Southern college transitioned from the one-time library instruction model to the role of an embedded librarian within a senior-level capstone course over a multi-year transition period. Through the use of multiple quantitative and qualitative assessment instruments, as well as anecdotal comments, and finally pre- and post-test student satisfaction and learning surveys, the library instruction and course requirements were revised. This course's implementation formed the basis of a campus-wide effort to embed librarians within on-campus and online/hybrid courses. Conclusions, discussion and areas for future research are included."

Librarians’ Views of Academic Library Support for Scholarly Publishing: An Every-day Perspective

Lin's insight:

"There is a felt redirection in focus of academic librarianship, from pedagogical information seeking tasks towards a more active publication support, a change which also includes a regained prominence for new forms of bibliographical work."

Embedded Academic Librarianship: A Review of the Literature

Most published accounts discuss librarians embedding content and ready access to services in an online course management system. A few notable cases describe the physical and cultural integration of librarians into the library user environs. Future research using valid quantitative methods is needed to explore the impact of large scale, customized, embedded programs.

Mobile Healthcare Faces The Future [Infographic]

Mobile Healthcare Faces The Future [Infographic] | Embedded librarianship | Scoop.it

The Mobile Revolution continues to change how industry after industry goes about day-to-day business. Yet one industry has been surprisingly slow to embrace the benefits of mobile: healthcare. Many observers find that strange, since healthcare could clearly benefit from the power of smartphones and tablets attached to the cloud.

Toward a Sustainable Embedded Librarian Program - Library 2.0

Toward a Sustainable Embedded Librarian Program - Library 2.0 | Embedded librarianship | Scoop.it

This session will describe how a small university library worked to develop a more sustainable way of meeting the research needs of students enrolled in online courses. Initially, we embedded individual librarians in online courses, to provide content and monitor the library-related discussion forums within. With limited staffing and tight budgets and with the population of online students growing rapidly, we were struggling to continue in this fashion.

Assisting Research Versus Research Assistance | Peer to Peer Review

Assisting Research Versus Research Assistance | Peer to Peer Review | Embedded librarianship | Scoop.it
The difference between the two roles lies in the teaching function of academic librarians. We don’t do people’s research for them; we teach them how to do their own research better. We serve the faculty, but we don’t serve as the personal research assistants of individual faculty members. Even if there were enough librarians for this to be possible, which is unlikely in most places, it wouldn’t be desirable from our perspective. Becoming indispensable to faculty members is a worthwhile goal, but not if it means doing their research for them. Essential should not mean servile.

Embedding library resources into learning management systems

So while the automated process ensures that every Blackboard course site includes a general introduction to library resources, a subject-specific LibGuide or a professional library’s Web page or list of research tools, librarians are still encouraged to foster and maintain relationships with faculty and students in their disciplines, developing course-specific LibGuides in much the same manner that they did in the early semesters of the project. In manually linking specialized guides to the Library Guides menu item, they overwrite the automatically generated URL and, as before, become privy to course communication, syllabi, and assignments.

Embedded Librarians | Inside Higher Ed

Embedded Librarians | Inside Higher Ed | Embedded librarianship | Scoop.it

The model Roderer and her staff are pursuing is distributed not only in the sense that every researcher’s computer can access the library’s website and its vaults of electronic journal articles and e-books, but in that library personnel are embedded in various departments to work with researchers on their own turf. These staffers are no longer called librarians; they are “informationists.”
