Just plain good advice for email marketing. And, I would add, know the end goal you want to achieve, even before you start writing your e-newsletter.

What is the exact point you want to get across to your readers, and what is the result you want? Those two things will help you form your subject line, your call to action and everything in between!

Opens, Clicks, And Blocks In The Third Age Of Email Deliverability

Opens, Clicks, And Blocks In The Third Age Of Email Deliverability | Email Marketing Virtual Assistant | Scoop.it
In the First Age of Email Deliverability, there were no rules and few if any consequences for bad behavior. In the Second Age, ISPs armed their users with the "report spam" button -- and senders that
received too many complaints saw their emails junked or blocked. In the Third Age, which we're in now, ISPs factor engagement metrics into their filtering decisions, with those decisions made on the
individual as well as global level. These changes mean that email subscribers not only have to tolerate marketers' emails, but have to at least occasionally engage with them -- which in turn means
that marketers can't bloat their email lists with inactive subscribers to lower their spam complaint rates. In the Third Age of Email Marketing, the need for list quality keeps list-size ambitions in
check.

Engagement matters!

The ROI of Email is Immeasurable

The ROI of Email is Immeasurable | Email Marketing Virtual Assistant | Scoop.it
I just had a prospective client reply to a newsletter we sent them in 2010. That’s four years ago, folks. And I bet you have some old emails in your inbox waiting for your attention too, emails you...
Denise Aday's insight:

Scott says: "You might say old emails never die. They just don’t make it into your email reporting."

Top takeaway: you will never know the true ROI of your emails, so don't over-fret about stats. Concentrate on providing great value and content and a top quality subscriber experience.

To do starting today:

Assuming that great content...

Make sure your subject lines are descriptive and compelling enough for potential long-term reference, since people intentionally hang onto some emails for a very long time.

True for me, too. You?

Denise Aday's insight:

"Email newsletters, an old-school artifact of the web that was supposed to die along with dial-up connections, are not only still around, but very much on the march. . . . Newsletters are clicking because readers have grown tired of the endless stream of information on the Internet, and having something finite and recognizable show up in your inbox can impose order on all that chaos."

8 Uses of Preheader Text to Improve Email Open Rates (Plus 1 Technique to Avoid) | Email Marketing Virtual Assistant | Scoop.it
Bad news, friends. Your subscribers spend less than three to four seconds deciding whether or not to open your email. And because at least 75 percent of folks first read email on their mobile devices, it's all too easy for them to swipe and delete without a second thought. The good news? Email marketers have another tool to grab subscribers' attention: preheader text.
Denise Aday's insight:

"With a bit of creativity, your email preheader text can deliver big results."

Wakeup Call: Begin Your Emails with a Call to Action in Mind

Wakeup Call: Begin Your Emails with a Call to Action in Mind | Email Marketing Virtual Assistant | Scoop.it
Every email has a goal and 99 out of a hundred times that involves the subscriber taking an action. So the call to action is one of the most important parts of any email. But what if you can’t find them?

Via Meg Appleby
Denise Aday's insight:

Even if you swear the piece is strictly informative, you must have an action in mind for the reader to take. (Share? Comment?) If not, why send it in the first place?

So be sure to think this through and make it clear and easy.

Excellent advice from Seth's big brain!

Although you could say it's implied in items 1 and 7, I would also add not to pull the ol' "bait and switch." If you offer a free download and intend to follow with ongoing emails of any kind, tell people so up front! Don't use the "everyone's doing it" excuse so subscribers should just expect it in exchange for the gift. Be respectful and tell them what to expect so they're giving informed permission.

Rather much more respectfully and transparently, asking your subscribers directly about themselves and how you can serve them better -- if they would like that.

The Most Effective Email Subject Line Length

The Most Effective Email Subject Line Length | Email Marketing Virtual Assistant | Scoop.it
Email Marketing - Emails with subject lines of 6-10 words have the highest open rates, yet most emails sent by marketers have subject lines of 11-15 words, according to a recent report from ...
Denise Aday's insight:

The most interesting finding to me here is that subject lines of 6-10 words actually out-performed shorter ones, as very short email subject lines are the usual recommendation. I often find this conventional wisdom limiting for creating a subject line with a clear, "what's in it for me" to open, message. Nice to have some new data to support this marketing urge.

"For the emails analyzed, those with 6-10 word subject lines had a 21% open rate. Those with subject lines containing five or fewer words ranked second with a 16% open rate, and those with 11-15 words had a 14% open rate."

Succinctness is still the order of the day. Be brief, but be clear.

How To Create A Self-Paced Email Course

How To Create A Self-Paced Email Course | Email Marketing Virtual Assistant | Scoop.it
In this article, Paul Jarvis demonstrates how he created a self-paced email course that had over 1,000 registrations in the first 24 hours, and almost 2,500 in the first week.
Denise Aday's insight:

MailChimp autoresponder genius!

Set up a self-paced ecourse instead of one based on a set schedule.

More complicated -- and does involve setting up a few supporting web pages -- but surely worth the effort if each lesson will take some time to complete. This would also serve as an excellent accountability tool for the course taker, who would have to click a link to complete a lesson and receive the next one.

This also presents some exciting possibilities for increasing engagement, the number of transactional emails (the most effective type), and subsequent sales and referrals.
