MOOCs for Teachers: Coursera Offers Online Teacher Training Program | MindShift

MOOCs for Teachers: Coursera Offers Online Teacher Training Program | MindShift | ELTECH | Scoop.it

Berry supports the idea of MOOCs for professional development in theory because he’d like to see teachers be able to choose and direct their own learning. But he thinks success hinges on skilled virtual facilitators who both know the subject matter and how to foster high quality discussion and communication online in order to make it work well.

Robin Kay's curator insight, May 8, 2013 6:23 AM

Interesting move - I would watch this one closely.  MOOCs seem better than large lecturs and in Coursera are much better designed.  Not sure I would want to be taught by a teachers whose only credentials were from Coursera, but I can see other higher education areas being better served by MOOCs.

MOOCs are interesting to look at in relation to finding possible best practice in setting up online courses

Multilingualism as a challenge to universities

Multilingualism as a challenge to universities | ELTECH | Scoop.it

As the use of English continues to spread in Finnish universities, concerns have been raised about it threatening the status of Finnish and Swedish as languages of science and education. [...] Taina Saarinen believes the English-language Master’s degree programmes are most beneficial to Finnish students, who acquire multilingual expertise. However, international students rarely learn enough Finnish or Swedish during the two-year programme to find employment after graduation.

A global look at pedagogies for 21st century skills

A global look at pedagogies for 21st century skills | ELTECH | Scoop.it

Disconnects between policy mandates/supports and desired practice were found in most of the schools and all of the systems in our sample. For example, teachers were often being asked to innovate while being incented and judged solely by measures of the facts that students had acquired through traditional means, or given ICT to use without related curricular materials and models for ways to use it powerfully and effectively in subject matter learning. It was rare that teachers experienced standards, curriculum, professional development, assessments, and incentives that all aligned to support the development of students’ 21st century skills.

Mauricio Martinez's insight:

Integration of ICT within currucula is taking a very unsystematic path. No integration among policy makers, institutions and teachers. In need for standarization and regulation.

Ivon Prefontaine's curator insight, July 11, 2013 9:18 AM

It is not the desired practice which is disconnected, but more an issue of did policy makers actually go into classrooms and have conversations with teachers.

How To Combat Student Plagiarism - Edudemic

How To Combat Student Plagiarism - Edudemic | ELTECH | Scoop.it

As teachers, when we assign a research project, we often focus on the end product: the research essay, presentation, etc. However, students (especially young students) do not automatically know how to conduct meaningful research. Our modern students are used to Googling answers. They have grown accustomed to information being readily available. However, as academics, we know that research isn’t a  fast process. It’s slow and deliberate. As a teacher, I need to intentionally slow my students down during this exercise. I do this by breaking down a larger project into more manageable chunks and focusing on the process.

Yes, which is what is meant by "plagiarism proof" assignments. I would also add that it is essential to practice paraphrasing and do it effectively by using all four skills. The Use and Abuse of Technology in the Classroom

The Use and Abuse of Technology in the Classroom | ELTECH | Scoop.it

Technology should not be used as simply a digital worksheet. There are many apps and Internet sites available that are simply a technological version of a paper task, forcing students to practice over and over a skill that they may already have mastered.  Don’t get me wrong. Skills do need to be practiced. I just happen to think that students should spend most of their time using technology for more creative purposes.
