Designing for Learning's curator insight, December 2, 2013 11:37 PM

Sometimes it's worth reflecting the range of ways in which learning has been considered over time. I don't think it's going to become any less complex as we explore both new paradigms and interactions between old ones.

From around the web

Is such a thing even possible? (Is such a thing desirable?) Can you have a learning history and not have an identity? Aren't these inextricable?"

Some interesting thoughts in here on 'personalization' and 'identity' in algorithm-based adaptive learning technology.

In England children now start formal schooling, and the formal teaching of literacy and numeracy at the age of four.  A recent letter signed by around 130 early childhood education experts, including myself, published in the Daily Telegraph  (11 Sept 2013) advocated an extension of informal, play-based pre-school provision and a delay to the start of formal ‘schooling’ in England from the current effective start until the age of seven (in line with a number of other European countries who currently have higher levels of academic achievement and child well-being).

The Michel Thomas Method - The Natural Way to Learn a New Language

The Michel Thomas Method - The Natural Way to Learn a New Language | ELT publishing | Scoop.it
Richard Whiteside's insight:

Is this, and other courses of its kind (see Rosetta Stone, BBC publishing etc), not what the self-study edtech stuff like Voxy, Busuu and Duolingo are competing with? To what extent have these decades old courses held back the march of private ELT institutes? Not much, I'd say.

So, as the ELT industry has largely ignored the bookshop shelves stacked with self-study language learning materials all this time, should we really be so bothered about the latest edtech versions of these things? Or do teachers just continue suggesting that students can use these materials to support their classroom learning?

Unless these edtech upstarts can sell large scale to schools, then will they really make inroads into the ELT market?

I'm waiting to be convinced, I must say.
