I am so happy that you shared this. I shared Nancy Duarte's Hero's Journey one day in the classroom because the internet was down and I couldn't give my regular presentation slides. Ten months later, students still tell me that I "ruin in a good way' their movie watching because they think of this cycle.

Favorite insight from author Simon Staffans: "There’s no contest here, at least not for me. Story is everything when it comes to transmedia. Is it a compelling and immersive story that has the weight and the bones to stretch to different platforms? Does it have a story world already in place, or is it easily conceivable how such a world could be designed and developed? Are the protagonists and antagonists (and side characters) suitable for a deeper mythology? Is it possible to sense the existence of a narrative superstructure somewhere along the road? If a project’s Story supports transmedia, you’re halfway there. If it doesn’t, don’t bother."

Marco Bertolini's curator insight, July 24, 2013 9:28 AM

Siobhan O'Flynn:  "Although I can think of numerous examples where ‘story first’ was the design principle to follow, particularly for documentary and/or more art house projects (think ARTE, NFB), in this instance [Ruby Skye P.I.] in a more mainstream, commercial space Jill’s audience first engagement strategy is now a stand-out winner by all metrics of success."

Story Horizon:  "For web series, we can often see the effect of the studio audience in the analytics/statistics on the video itself. James Curcio:  “Fiction and non-fiction, fact and myth, often aren’t opposites. These lines blend a little more every day. When these things play such a crucial role in our news as well as entertainment media, and in a world where social media platforms are often at the front lines of cultural revolutions, it is increasingly necessary that these things are understood.

Aliette de Villeneuve's curator insight, August 29, 2013 4:00 AM

Why are TV companies often the worst offenders when it comes to producing original and creative multiplatform offerings? Why are most just serving up brochure websites, the occassional ‘send in your video via YouTube’ or ‘tweet in what you think, we really want to know’?
