For many years I was embarrassed about my crooked teeth, but my fear of the dentist took over my life so this stopped me from seeking treatment. I noticed my teeth started to move when I was in my teenage years but at that time, I thought I could live with it, not thinking they could eventually become worse. Whilst my friends and family would say they hardly noticed, I felt they were only saying this to ease my worry and give me a confidence boost. They may never have noticed, but when it’s a personal issue it is something that plays on your mind most of the time. When meeting new people, I would sometimes try to speak with my lips as close together as possible, which made me look ridiculous and soon enough this became a habit.

By the time I reached my mid-twenties, I had finished university and the job search began. I had several interviews and my nerves would take over, but not because of the prospect of not being employed, but because of what they might think about my crooked teeth. I realised I had to do something about this issue, and so I booked a consultation with a London Orthodontist. I explained my fears and the smile I have always dreamt about. It wasn’t just the fear of having numerous objects in my mouth at once, it was the thought of having a brace tightened, causing intense pressure on the mouth. I don’t understand when or why my fear of the dentist appeared, I have a high pain threshold but anything coming into close contact with my mouth sends me into a nervous frenzy, and I would encounter horrible panic attacks.

America has a reputation for being the best dentists in the world. Many have crossed the Atlantic to seek what they believed to be the best dental treatment in the world. The reasons for the United States gaining this reputation is due to the vast number of citizens seeking cosmetic dental treatment. The stereotypical American will have a mouth full of bright, white veneers that shine like glass and reflect the epitome of healthy. This idea is vastly changing and many are now flocking to England’s capital to undergo dental work. You’ll find now that the best dentists are located in London.

The Americans have mocked the British for their bad teeth for decades, but thanks to the expertise in dentistry, the London dentist is now classified as world class. It is unfair the Americans have stereotyped the British for having bad teeth, when come middle age, all teeth suffer from wear and tear, regardless of nationality. But the qualified and experienced dentists London now has, ensures this no longer happens. The difference between British and American teeth is the fakeness that the latter like to follow the crowd (the Hollywood celebrities) and go after a perfect set of fake teeth.  Americans believe the perfect smile is the Hollywood smile which is nothing but artificial, and costs thousands of dollars. Veganism doesn’t have to Lack Protein

Whilst many meat products can be very unhealthy when consumed in large amounts, being a vegan doesn’t mean that one is suddenly living a nutritionally balanced life.

Myth: Vegan diets lack Protein
Whilst meat is rich in the proteins that are essential for a healthy diet, it is hardly exclusive in that respect. Soymilk, Pulses and Oatmeal are all very high in protein and completely free of any animal produce. An adult needs around 55gs of protein a day to live a healthy life and a single cup of cooked lentils provides more than a third of that. Any lentil based stew is going to contain just as much protein as a meat dish and it’s easy to work a few other little bits in throughout the day. Many soy products are incredibly rich in it, and all it will take is a few slices in a sandwich to make sure that a healthy balance is maintained.

Myth: Not eating meat can be bad for your teeth
This is one that every London dentist seems to be eternally explaining to concerned yummy mummies and those looking to live a better life. It’s true that vegans are generally more susceptible to gum disease than meat eaters, but this is because of a lack of education in nutrition rather than any inherent problem. Yes, avoiding all those horrible chemicals added to cows’ milk is fantastic but the lack of calcium in such a diet may very well lead to weaker bones and teeth. Dentists will always give you a telling off for drinking too many fizzy drinks, eating too many sweets and overall, having a lot of sugar in our diets. If a dentist put chocolate or sweets in front of you along with a packet of crisps and a box of raisins, and asked what is worse for your teeth, your gut instinct would be the chocolate and sweets. Wrong. Shockingly it would be the crisps and raisins. Too much sugar is bad not only for our teeth but our general well being. However it isn’t sugar that rots your teeth, it is the bacteria known as streptococcus mutans, in other words, starch. It is a type of acid that eats away at enamel that can cause serious problems and eventually lead to tooth loss.

The bacteria found in our mouths don’t just thrive off sugar, they love getting stuck into carbohydrates. Shockingly, a hard fact to get your head around is that eating a portion of chips instead of drinking a can of diet coke is actually worse for your teeth. Sugars dissolve quickly in your saliva but potato starch produces more acid that clings to teeth longer. For those who have a carb-filled diet, you may avoid sugary sweets and fizzy drinks but don’t be fooled, your teeth are still suffering if you don’t ensure you give them a good clean after each meal. Tooth decay is the most widespread human disease in the world but with thanks to the dentists in London, multiple tooth fixing is available if your teeth have become worse for wear over the years. The Coalition Plans to Tax Unhealthy Food

Neither side is able to put forward a definitive argument. Those in favour are often floored by the simple matter of alcohol, something else which is dangerous in large quantities, damaging the nation’s health and costing the NHS vast sums of money.

Despite claiming to loathe the centralised bureaucracy of New Labour, the Coalition seems to be creeping ever closer to similar such measures. On the advice of top London oral surgeons, nutritionists and doctors, they are proposing a blanket tax on unhealthy foods.

This isn’t the first time that politicians have tried to address the issue. They have previously called for restrictions on when advertisements for unhealthy could be shown, for higher taxation and, in some extreme cases, total bans or rationing. This time however, the slant is very much focussed towards children. Britain’s childhood obesity issues are swiftly becoming a source of national shame and many prefer not to talk about the possibility of joining their American cousins in the malnutrition club. That would be fine, if it wasn’t turning into a massive problem. Recent figures suggested that a staggering 1 in 4 children in Britain are obese. Not only will this have a big impact on their lives, affecting self esteem and health, but it will also cost the NHS billions. Even now healthy gurus and libertarians are fighting a pitched battle over the issue.

To the latter, limiting the personal choices of individuals is a disgrace, an example of government interference gone too far. If the Coalition steps in to try and curb these issues, they are basically imposing their will on the people, saying that they know better and therefore they will shape people’s lives accordingly. That’s a worrying state of affairs, and relies on rhetoric that is found in almost every dictator state. It’s also fundamentally against the decentralised approach to government that the Conservatives were elected on, so many backbenchers fear that pushing such draconian reforms through will damage the party’s chances at the polls.

On the other side, there are those that are staggered by the blasé approach being taken by many people. They simply cannot believe that responsible parents would ignore the advice of experienced London oral surgeons and doctors, that they would let their children’s health suffer as a result of some misguided belief in self determinism. They argue that people have had plenty of time to exercise their right to complete free will on the issue, and they have abused their power. Instead of teaching their children good nutritional practices, they have let them grow fat and lazy. It’s now reaching a very dangerous point for society, a tipping point where the government must act in order to prevent an epidemic.

Given the substantial division of opinion in this matter, it seems like this is an issue that will rage on and on.
