I wonder whether it is appreciated that all children who learn English (as a first, second or third language) go through such stages. There is, in fact, a very strong structural pressure to use 'walk'.

For English language learner Bohang, who comes from China, the task was daunting.
Nancy Jacobs's insight:

Another voice of someone who's learned another language might be a good idea to encourage my ELLs. It is a daunting task, and it does take hard work. Many of my students expect it to happen - already - and blame me for their not learning English "fast enough."

Speak Out: English should be schools' first language
Elgin Courier News
English as second language: I am totally appalled that School District U46 wants to make English the second language of this country.
Nancy Jacobs's insight:

Really??? Someone needs to tell this person that "English as a Second Language" doesn't mean that the school is giving English less priority. It means that for that student English is their second (or third, or fourth, etc.) language that they will speak. It means that English is not their native language and so they are learning it as a second language. This has a different approach than  learning English as a Foreign language.
