Sustainable Living: Happy Planet Index

Sustainable Living: Happy Planet Index | Elevator Pitch: Education for Sustainability | Scoop.it
The Happy Planet Index (HPI) is the leading global measure of sustainable well-being. The HPI measures what matters: the extent to which countries deliver long, happy, sustainable lives for the people that live in them.
Linda Alexander's insight:

The GDP is not the best measurement of sustainable living.  The Happy Planet Index link includes an explanation of their measurements index and a map of the world related to the three main factors.  151 Countries are Rated.

"The HPI measures what matters: the extent to which countries deliver long, happy, sustainable lives for the people that live in them. The Index uses global data on life expectancy, experienced well-being and Ecological Footprint." Check it out...

U.S. Compared to Weight of the World (BMI's) | Visual.ly | Elevator Pitch: Education for Sustainability | Scoop.it
The average body mass index (BMI) values for adults around the globe compared.
Linda Alexander's insight:

Visually has done an excellent job providing data via these Weight of the World charts. Visual charts showcase the average body mass index (BMI) for countries all around the world.  The United States, with our extremely high caloric intake/food consumption, can then be compared to the rest of the world.  It begs the question: Can the U.S. truly sustain eating at these historically high, caloric levels and successfully work to also feed the entire world?

Matt Damon And Water.Org On Building A Winning YouTube Campaign, Toilet Striking | Elevator Pitch: Education for Sustainability | Scoop.it
On February 11th Water.org launched StrikeWithMe.org, an unusual campaign to raise awareness of a vexing problem that is hard to message: the plight of people who struggle without clean water and working sanitation.
Linda Alexander's insight:

How do you get people to care and pay attention to an issue like clean water? It really isn't easy.  You can be funny, but if you're too funny the entire cause will get lost in the humor.  This speaks to the balance required to get your message across in a manner that people will understand.

"Bioinspiration, biomimicry, biomimetics, biophilia. While there are various terms to describe it, the basic notion of nature as genius/genii with a seemingly infinite basket of solutions for our world's problems is a sexy topic these days. But can it be an economic game-changer?"

The Change We Believe In, But Never Test

The Change We Believe In, But Never Test | Elevator Pitch: Education for Sustainability | Scoop.it
If we really want to change the world, we need to put our core beliefs about how the world changes to the test.
Linda Alexander's insight:

This article begins with an overview of a few philosophical underpinnings related to the unique lense each one of us subscribes to as far as climate change and/or the larger sustainability or, a far better descriptor, "flourishing" movement. Yes, we really want the world to flourish more than simply sustain, correct? However, the article is really about personally challenging and testing new and existing theories that arise and make their way into our overarching narrative; theories that are often accepted too fast or without enough testing and debate...

March 22nd is Global Water Day...Get the Facts | Elevator Pitch: Education for Sustainability | Scoop.it
Linda Alexander's insight:

March 22nd is Global Water Day.  It's a day to recognize the global water crisis and any progress that we've made.  At water.org you will find facts related to a lack of access to clean water.  For instance, the number of children who die every few seconds.  The glass ceiling aside, millions of women can do little else but work to secure access to clean water--they walk great distances and carry 40 pound jerry cans on their backs.  Donate, follow on Twitter, and learn the facts...

These “Farmscrapers” Are Entire Cities In Crazy, Wobbly Looking Towers

These “Farmscrapers” Are Entire Cities In Crazy, Wobbly Looking Towers | Elevator Pitch: Education for Sustainability | Scoop.it
These incredible looking buildings are designed by a Belgian architect named Vincent Callebaut.
Linda Alexander's insight:

If you're generally against urban farming of any kind (and I know some do hold these views), these so called "farmscrapers" will not foster your endearment.  The buildings are supposedly designed to mimic the look of rocks and trees that often overhang mountainous cliffs.  Given I spend part of my time in a Chicago skyscraper, The Aqua, which is supposedly environmentally-friendly in terms of its LEED certification, swaying, river-like balconies that are suppose to optimize the use of light, etc., I am dubious of the farmscaper design in terms of its overall weight, water needs, and use of ground materials. Foremost, I can't imagine constructing farmscrapers in any areas of the country where snow and ice are issues. They are quite interesting creations, however. Welcoming any and all reactions to their general feasibility and environmental impact here...

Linda Alexander's insight:
